Wolfsburg beat Dortmund 3-1 to lift German Cup

Berlin, May 31 (IANS): VfL Wolfsburg turned the tides to shock Borussia Dortmund with a 3-1 comeback victory within 16 minutes, clinching the club's first ever German Cup football title at the Olympia stadium here.

Wolfsburg lifted the first German Cup in the club's history on Saturday as Dieter Hecking's men recovered from an early deficit through Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, before Luiz Gustavo, Kevin De Bruyne and Bas Dost made the game safe within 38 minutes, reports Xinhua.

Both sides started highly motivated and offensively minded yet the Dortmund caught a better start as Aubameyang broke the deadlock with five minutes into the game. The Gabon international made use of a cross by Shinji Kagawa to slot home with a volley into the far post.

Wolfsburg remained unimpressed and tried to respond two minutes later but Ivan Perisic was unable to overcome Dortmund goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak from promising position.

The early lead played into Dortmund's hands, as Juergen Klopp's men were able to implement their feared fast breaks. However, the "BVB" failed to extend the lead in the 18th minute because Marco Reus pulled wide from inside the box.

The "Wolves" punished Dortmund's wastefulness four minutes later through Gustavo, who made use of a rebound following Naldo's free-kick hammer from 25 meters to restore parity.

Wolfsburg gained momentum and flabbergasted Dortmund with the 2-1 lead ten minutes later. Dortmund's defence was unable to clear the ball from the penalty area allowing De Bruyne to unleash a vicious effort from 18 meters into the bottom left corner.

Dortmund wobbled meanwhile Wolfsburg were not done with the scoring as Dost also added his name to the scorecards by heading home a pin-point cross by Ivan Perisic at the far post with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Wolfsburg's third goal put the game beyond doubt as Dortmund lacked in penetration to overcome Diego Beanglio for a second time. Although, Kagawa and Aubameyang came close to reduce the arrears after the restart.

"We made a good game but we had no luck today. I grant Dieter Hecking and Wolfsburg the title. They deserved to win. However, the defeat was unnecessary for us," Dortmund coach Klopp said.

Klopp leaves the club after seven years and three titles meanwhile Hecking lift his first ever title and guided Wolfsburg to its first German Cup title.

"It was an outstanding performance by the whole team," Hecking said.
