Mangaluru: Newborn dies at Lady Goschen hospital, family blames doctors

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Jun 28: Chaos prevailed at Lady Goschen hospital here on Sunday June 28 after a newborn died, allegedly due to the negligence of the hospital doctors.

Prabhavati, wife of Aman from Kunjathbail here was admitted to Lady Goschen hospital for delivery on June 25. She delivered a boy baby weighing 2.5 kg the same day through caesarean.

The baby was said to be fine till 2 pm on Sunday, but at around 2.30 pm, the doctors found that the baby had turned blue and stopped breathing. Efforts to save the baby failed.

Speaking to reporters, Aman said that the baby was in good health, but the doctors at the hospital told him to get the blood test of the baby done at another hospital. "The baby was kept in incubator and due to its temperature, he died. It is due to the negligence of doctors," the father alleged.

Dr Rajesh, speaking to reporters said that the baby might have died due to aspiration of milk or due to suffocation during feeding.

"Nearly 20 ml of milk was found in the trachea of the baby. The doctors made all efforts to save the baby for about 20 minutes, but in vain. We then declared the baby dead and informed the father. We did our best to save the newborn. The post likely cause of death may be milk aspiration or suffocation when feeding, but only a post-mortem would reveal the exact cause. The family is alleging that current passed through the baby, but that is not possible. There is no such equipment here. We keep babies in warmer to adjust them to normal temperature, and there is no question of any current passing through," he added.

Asked why the baby was sent for blood test, a doctor at the hospital said that it was only to check for jaundice and had nothing to do with the baby's death. He also said that it was a normal procedure to keep newborn babies in the warmer.

Aneesh, a relative alleged that 'hospital doctors had killed the baby'. Relatives and locals held a flash protest at the hospital demanding health minister U T Khader to visit the spot and shouted slogans. However, the minister has left for Belagavi to attend the monsoon session which begins from Monday July 29.

As the protest grew stronger, DCP Shantaraju arrived at the spot and took control of the situation. After nearly half an hour of arguments, he finally managed to convince the protestors and asked them to file a complaint against the hospital.

The baby was taken to Wenlock for post-mortem and the mother Prabhavati was shifted to a private hospital.

The protestors also demanded to see the junior doctor who was present at the time of the baby's death. However, the hospital authorities and the police refused to allow them inside. Finally, only Prabhavati's husband and mother were allowed to meet the doctor.

The protest ended after it was decided to file a case against the hospital.

It is a sad incident .but does not mean to blame the doctors and their team, this is the negligence of the mother.if the child would have been fed in a proper technique, this incident would not have happened.if this would have happened in their home, then whom would they blame?? Just because it happened in the hospital does not mean that it's the doctors fault !!

mr.Sharan thank you for your sufficient explanation regarding the pain and struggle that doctor, nurses and the team members go through in their healing profession.Don't be discouraged because of these ignorant peoples reaction.I have seen the facilities and the efforts the team is making in life saving process. As you said people come to govt.hospitals are high risk patients.Ante natal care is very important. importance of breast feeding in sitting position also important. Most of these women are lazy or not like matured ones.If we advise also they wont take it seriously.this is a lesson for all the post natal mothers not to be lazy and burp the baby after each feed.Hope this is the lesson for all the mothers. You just place all the trouble in your God's hand. And continue the good work as you do to all these patients who come to you.God will reward your efforts. We don't want any appreciation from human beings...

Today people are not coming forward to serve in medical field...because when something goes wrong whole area people will gather to attack doctors and hospital staff. When doctors save life no one is there to appreciate the effort.I truly believe life is given by God and he has the right to take away...we have no choice to say i want to live few more days..I wont think doctors and nurses are there to take the life...So let us behave in a mature way.Feeding the new born in sleeping position can cause aspiration.it could be the lack of awareness of the mother and relatives.Due to surgery she may have a lot of pain ,so difficult to feed the baby..let us pray for mrs.prabhavathi that she may have strength to bear this pain and accept the fact positively..

I agree with Sharan.and I am sure Dr.rajeshs team is doing a good service towards their patients.this is an unfortunate incident.and neither the team nor the parents can be blamed.if the child would have died while performing an surgery or procedure,it wld b the teams fault.but here ,as the child died due to aspiration while the mother was feeding it,it's very unfortunate .lets pray for the parents n family of the child.

Khader should be held responsible for the poor state of this hospital... Let's keep politics aside, may the soul of new born merges with the holy abode...

anita pinto..u don,t have any business calling doctors names.i,m sure dr.rajesh knows his job better than you do.i,m a doctor myself.patients are counselled about breast feeding techniques..but they refuse to follow them the kind of patients who come there are usually high risk patients.with the highly deficient infrastructure, facilities and staff,, the number of patients handled at LGH and the outcomes are amazing.do you know the statistics?near 30 or more deliveries a day with half of them high risk ones.u hear about one mishap regarding a mother or child you react like this?please don,t go to a doctor if you are ill.if everyone were like you we,d not like to give any treatment.we do our best,we are not God. just a month ago a young 40 year old doc, an anaesthetist died in sleep within 2 days of a minor surgery.the family is decent enough to accept certain inevitable incidents and does,nt find faults like you.even in an advanced country like US maternal mortality is increasing.1 in 4800.we all carry audits when there is a mishap n try to see if there was something better we could do & implement it too.we can,t even refuse patients who come to our facility as it,s a govt.set up.so we try to do our best.don,t push us to such an extent where we are forced to refuse potential troublemakers. ultimately a genuine patient will suffer the consequenses.if you don,t have faith we can,t treat you.rest assured Govt.LGH is doing an extremely good job with the overload of cases, lack of ICU & the very high risk cases they handle.Daijiworld should not publish loose talk.stop verbal doctor bashing at every mishap especially if you are not one.hope you have got my point.

anita pinto. indian doctors making money!. indian doctors in govt/private setup dont get paid as much as the doctors are paid in austarlia or any other country abroad. international they are given fixed no of hrs per week and fixed number of patients are seen per day. indian doctors work in poor setup with minimalist facilities and long shifts. 12- 24hrs sometimes per day!
it is become a trend in this country to blame a doctor for the negligence even if it may be negligence on part of the family.
why dont u try working a doctors shift and then talk. doctors are forced to ask for unnecessary tests etc coz corporate hospitals demand so and if not done patients say that the doctor is not doing the necessary.
2.5kg is normal weight for an indian new born. weight ranges from 2.5-3kg. old days when the midwives would delivery the baby and use all sorts of unsterilized methods and baby/mother died that time no one would blame them.
some of you are saying interns pgs should not touch the patient and only observe. what can u learn on observation without hands on experience. how will that intern or trainee become a good doctor without experience. so an engineer intern should just observe when his superiors are working up the mechanics of something or construction etc. no wonder machines are now faulty or buildings collapse.
at the end neither you nor i have the right to judge any professional unless we have been in their work field. yes corruption is everywhere in all fields. we all try are best in whatever field we are.
instead of getting out there and blaming the 1st person lets be patient 1st and see what went wrong. yes a child lost its life. could have been the fault of the mother too. ever thought of that? a child can suffocate when a mother is feeding her baby. 1st few days after birth are always critical. it is sad that a family lost a baby. hope they find some peace and are able to move forward.

There is a huge rush of patient in government hospitals and ratio of doctors to patients is very low. Most of seniors docs supervise and patients r handled by juniors or trainees. One mistake can b lethal . There is a urgency to increase exp doctors and trainees should b barred from treating patients , being observers they should only learn. Sorry about the little soul.

@ lawrence , lydia , sometimes biased laws r biggest reason for abortions. Recent TOI survey suggests , abortions rates among under 15 girls is increased exponentially by 67 percent. Reasons ? ! , fear of POCSO act! , as it can punish the girl too when both r minor or a adult man. When age of puberty is getting lower and lower day by day , v kept patriarchy very high age of consent . They will not stop having sex , rather hide it and then abort the child. Now the true sufferer is the baby itself. This is the reason recent madrass high court granted bail to man , ........internationally a latin country allowed a 10 year pregnant girl to have baby ( despite feminist outrage )......

I don't think baby will turn blue after suffocation. It is possible that, baby could die due to lack of sunlight?. But doctor should know the exact reason, he cannot use the word 'might have'.

@JK:Udipi,why many of you are commenting nonsense without knowing anything?A Baby as well grown up People too get suffocated when not immediate help is given .suffocating means Food or fluids go into the trachea instead of to stomach. It happens even a grown Person gets cough during his meals and the Food might during he is tryng to breath all of sudden goes into trachea ,and suffocates while it blocks or goes to lungs.Even children swallow playthings which is too dangerous.Dont give the fault always to the medical persons. At the same time since the Baby was in incubator, fed milk must have been vomited by the Baby without anybodys notice and asperated and got choked.sad.

JK,Udipi,of course .Trachea is the passage to the lungs and brain which when blocked ,one cannot breath, fresh air Oxygen is not supplied to lungs which is important and one will get suffocated and turn blue.Thats why when someone even as a joke should not hold your neck tight till get choked.Immediate Oxygen supply is a must when turns blue either by mouth to mouth breathing or by in Hospital Oxygen supply.(naturally when choked blocked material should be removed.

Once Belgaum session is over, Health Minister may land in Mangalore to transfer or dismiss the Doctors and Nurses. A press statement will follow with eating at a roadside eatery. Battery of cameramen and media personnel will ensure adequate coverage. Mastered in the habit of deriving mileage even from mishaps. Let us ponder over a few issues in health service sector atleast now. Lady Goschen and Wenlock Government hospitals are flocked by MBBS interns and trainee nurses. Number of qualified doctors/nurses are not posted or made available to supervise them round the clock. Few of the nursing staffs are paid less than minimum wages, against which Mr. Kota Srinivas Poojari while inviting attention of Health Minister had sat on Dharna recently in front of his office.

The Minister rather offering responsible explanations escaped on excuses of busy schedule. No funds for diagnostic tests and Pharmacy have no stock of essential medicine in government hospitals. Poor patients are referred to outside laboratories for basic diagnostic tests. These cannot be called hospitals by any standards. In an over-taxed state, tax collected from people are not enough for the law makers and administrators to roam around and our country remain far away from a welfare state. Democracy in the present form of dispensation is really a costly affair.....? More MBBS Interns/freshers in the guise of rural posting will be given charge of PHCs from next year. More 108 ambulances will run across roads up and down. Arogya Cards and Health schemes will be floated periodically to divert attention with front page surrogate ads in newspaper. Our health service sector will remain in this format at least for next three more years.......

@ Anita Pinto. Australia,Dear Anita I am sure you are commenting without knowing ABC.from premature Born Baby or some medicine knowledge.like These mob shouting outside Hospital. It is sad that Baby died .2.5kg Baby we consider a premature Baby.and Special care should be taken about ist stabilzing temperature, feeding etc.I think milk in trachea means Baby must have coughed up and milk must have got into trachea because child was lying on back, not side .These Babys have not much strength either to suck up or breath.because they are premature, born before time. Its clear that Baby had milk in trachea.I too had the experience of 2.5kg Baby and I had not given it to personal but looked up self, even at home I gave bath self.because I know how they give bath to Babys, pouring hot water on Babys head.Sometimes should be careful with newborn Babys.very very sad ,they lost Baby, but giving others the fault Baby will not get back and fault to doctors or staff.Of course, failure can happen everywhere.Heartfelt sympathy to the parents, and hope they will have a cute and healthy Baby very soon.

I agree with you. A couple wishing for a male child will mercilessly abort a fetus upon knowing the gender is not of their preference.

Second thing to be noted here is children weighing 2.5 or below do many times add up to infant mortality which actually is the result of poor antenatal care/nutrition.

I do understand the pain of new parents here but we also must own up some responsibility than adding up to infant mortality which brings down our nation's rank lower in world health graph.

Just to get the admission for MBBS. They charge 60 to 75 lakhs and then for MD. It's 1.5 crore Rs. From where you can get good dedicated doctors.and who is moulding them.is is the society or the institutes?
