Saudi Prince Alwaleed pledges entire $32 bn fortune to charity

Riyadh, Jul 2 (AFP): Saudi Arabia's billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal on Wednesday pledged his entire USD 32-billion fortune to charitable projects over the coming years.

The prince said in a statement that the "philanthropic pledge will help build bridges to foster cultural understanding, develop communities, empower women, enable youth, provide vital disaster relief and create a more tolerant and accepting world."

He said the donation "will be allocated according to a well-devised plan throughout the coming years" but stressed there was no time limit on when the donation would be spent.

Alwaleed said he would head a board of trustees tasked with spending the money, adding that his pledge would still be used after his death "for humanitarian projects and initiatives".

The magnate belongs to the Saudi royal family and is a nephew of king Abdullah, who died on January 23.

In the conservative Islamic kingdom, Alwaleed, who holds no government rank, is unusual for his high profile and periodic comments about economic issues.

At a press conference, he said his pledge was modelled on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other philanthropic funds in the United States.

"This is very much separate from my ownership in Kingdom Holding," Alwaleed told reporters on the 66th-floor headquarters of the publicly listed company which he chairs.

As well as media investments, Kingdom Holding has interests ranging from the Euro Disney theme park to Four Seasons hotels and Citigroup.

Nice to hear. prince Waleed decision, was great and appreciable. Follower the step of Bill Gates and his wife, Warren Buffet.
If we go out to happiness, entrainment and enjoy, that will be only short time, and it's temporary. Again we are back as same,
Money can buy worldly things, enjoy life, but it will not give us peace of mind permanently.
when young all try hard to earn become wealthy, later having everything no inner peace, today live tomorrow departing from this world nothing brought or take, person try to find peace, in worldly way not possible than come to spiritually, what joy get there world cannot give later day by day can see changes in person. get inner healing in the person. Later come in mind to start like these good works…. I don’t know if it's like that here.
May God open eyes of our politicians, same as wealthy people like these for to do good works.
(Lots have wealth, may no health, no children, no family, no peace of mind, and people think why there is no peace in me havening everything feel like lonely, empty, what's wrong? And ask God take away everything in me and give me what I want, especially important for myself, may that peace, joy, happiness love… that normal may poor man has I don’t have. I have everything but I cannot enjoy, I have sufficient food but cannot eat. I have overflowing wealth but there is no one to take care or enjoy after me ,or I don’t know how it was used after me or wasted, I earned hard way using full of energy, may I don’t had time for family, I earned without you in my own way, I have plenty of family members, but no one with me, to share my suffering time to comport me. Having everything I feel lonely.)

There is something amiss in this report which has been published in the world media and nobody appears to have noticed it. As per this year’s Forbes List of 500 richest people, and if we are to believe it, Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal is worth only $22.6 bn and he is 34th in the list. How then he could donate 32 bn in charity? This however, is not to belittle the prince’s commendable charity initiative. We indeed appreciate his concern for the poor. If the figure is less, it doesn’t in anyway reduce the appreciation he richly deserves.

I am sure, the media should check their facts right and clarify.

So glad to see your name after a very long time. I hope and pray that this high charity totally unexpected will start a domino miracle game to touch the hearts of the rich-richer and richest people of the world. The Government's plans are entrapped in red tape will not solve the problems faced with the poor people of the world but only through generous hearted people, world-wide miracle can take place.

When these very rich people can get a spiritual insight in life, they will ponder about the real purpose and the brevity of life then they can make some drastic decisions to give away certain portion of their wealth to make others happy.

As a very ordinary person, personally I have greatly enjoyed the divine joy of life while watching the smiling face of the hungry people after they filled the belly there I saw living GOD.

I always admire his rules around his own company.
His company was the first to appoint lady staff during King Fahd rule. When there were no companies giving any opportunity to ladies.
He was the first to appoint a lady pilot for his chartered flight.
He always gave equal rights to the ladies in terms of social and workspace.

King Abdullah was admired by his way of rule and Prince Waleed was his adviser.
That resulted in major companies hiring lady staff giving them freedom to work in Saudi.

KAUST - King Abdullah University is the fist in Saudi to have Co-Education. I have my US Geophysical suppliers visiting the University, they look at the Uni faculty and they ask one question. Do students actually study here. Come on this is more or less a resort. That's the way its build on Red Sea shore. One of its kind.

BTW, Even in India we do find many many philanthropist all over. So no need to compare with others over our own people. They do it their way. We do it our way.

If your income is 100RS per day and you give away 5RS to the need. It also makes one among the best philanthropist...

Prince Al Waleed is an exceptional and noble Entrepreneur - one of a kind gifted from the Saudi Royal family who has gone far and beyond his normal capability in convincing the "Tolerant and Accepting World" that life has many faces and phases that we need to abide by and make this world a better place to live and prosper.

Prince Alwaleed has witnessed the nobility and generosity of people such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet and has come up with a philosophy how to allocate his God given privileges for the betterment of mankind.

Prince Alwaleed needs no Advisers to seek the pathway of his 32 billion dollar worth of fortunes to be allocated for many worthy causes all over the world. He is a wise man and he is a charitable man. He knows the value of his assets and he knows where his fortunes need be allocated.

This is an unusual and magnanimous gift from a Saudi Royal family member that need be well respected and nurtured for the benefit of millions of needy people all over the world. Projects relating to better Education, better Health Care, better Family planning, better Food production and distribution, better Research and Innovation, and most importantly an Independent and selfless Team of World Leaders who can guide him to channel his fortunes in a timely and unselfish manner.

God always had His infinite hand of mercy on all of us, and now God looks upon those whom He had chosen for many years to enjoy the fortune of Oil and use the ultimate rewards wisely with the help of many others that have already proven to be successful.

Leaders rub shoulders with other great leaders. Leaders such as Prince Alwaleed are now prompted by God to give his mind, heart and spirit in the lives of many others that deserve these timely rewards so that God may continue to bestow His blessings upon Prince Alwaleed and his family so that he may be a living model of inspiration for many others also can plan wonders.

Charity is indeed a noble gesture and the Prince should be congratulated and thanked for this great gesture. But in my opinion when charity is being done it should also have the following characteristics.
    and
    1. Many pledge in front of flashing cameras and video recordings and then this sensational news is flashed around the world. The giver thus gets an unnecessary overwhelming number of accolades, but when it comes to actual giving many don't follow through, or don't live up to what they pledged.

    2. Charity should be given to all irrespective of their race, religion or background. There should be no strings attached and the bulk of the money should go to countries/people where there is abject poverty. Hence, it is of paramount importance that Charity is given to the NEEDY and not the GREEDY. The worst case scenario is charitable donations have been made to violent extremist groups that promote terror.

    3. Lastly, the Bible says when doing good deeds your left hand should not know what your right hand has given away, and several genuine charitable gestures around the world have gone unreported because the giver choose all of the above and prefers to stay anonymous.

The third paragraph is correct in in any giving in between individuals.

Since Bill Gates and Warren Buffet began to give away, that inspired many. Bill Gates was inspired by another billionaires who gave away everything, used to travel in the economy class in the airplaine, had no house or car as his own. He gave away more than 6 billion dollars, now getting very old. Ted Turner (CNN) at first gave away $ 1 billion through the U.N. to channelize the charity through the World Health Organization.

What inspired Prince Alwaleed to give away $ 32 billion? This verse from the Quran " But tell of the favor of the Lord. (AIDhoha)".

He repeated in an interview many times about the Lord's help in his material blessings, about the sufferings of the world he has witnessed, Bill Gates and his wife, also Warren Buffet.

A great change in the society can take place when we try to display to the world in a practical way the "favor of the Lord" we have received through wiping the tears of the crying world. When we can see GOD's face in the hungry and naked world, we are truly acknowledging the favor of the Lord.

Reminds me of Michael Jackson's song of 1980's in support for victims of famine, and hunger in Africa :

"We're The World (USA For Africa)"

There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
    There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
    The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We all are a part of God's great big family
    And the truth, you know,
    Love is all we need

    [Chorus:]
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
    So let's start giving
    There's a choice we're making
    We're saving our own lives
    It's true we'll make a better day
    Just you and me

Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand

    [Chorus]

When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
    Well...well...well
Let's realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one

    [Chorus}

We all can make a difference in our country , in the whole world, irrespective of the wealth we possess.

Where there is a will, there is a way!!

Let's all be generous to those less fortunate around us.

    Now Dollar 320 crore x @Rs. 63.52 = Rs. 20324800000.00
A huge amount, isn't it? Hard to pronounce also.

Would any of our business tycoons in India shell out even half of this funds in charity?

Anyway, all the best to you, Mr. Prince Walid for having taken a decision of charity, that too in this holy month, to spend for humanitarian needs. Good luck, again.

Let this be a motivational event for the rich people all over the world to share their wealth for any charity or worthy cause they prefer.

To every rich person who showed keen interest to follow JESUS CHRIST, at first HE openly challenged them to dispose everything and give to the poor. The Islam religion very strictly teaches about charity to the poor as an integral part of their religion.

85 richest people of the world hold more wealth than 3.6 billion people (half of the world population) at the bottom level.

When we talk about charity, helping the helpless people, some rich people bring a lame logic that the poor became poor because they didn't work to get rich. That is totally a misleading and irrational logic. There are some cases that some people are too lazy to work, yet another group wasted their wealth through drugs-liquor and though other devilish lifestyle.

Prince Alwaleed is an open-minded person, having a big collection (over 300) of cars, custom-made Boeing 747-8 and Airbus 380, very expensive yacht, and palaces all over the world. A few years back he rescued the City Bank in the U.S.A. through injecting close to half a billion dollars, later on he made a big harvest through that investment. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have greatly influenced him finally he came to realize at 60, that holding on to his wealth is less pleasant than giving away to wipe away the tears of the crying world, also to use the wealth to create more friendship and harmony in the society.

Hearty congratulations. May GOD richly bless him, family and business so abundantly.

I am not saying share it to poor but reach to small towns and develop the roads and infrastructure so that they are into the mainstream. develop schools, resident schools, hospitals . They are building big schools and hospitals with highest fees. And all the governments are modifying laws in favour of ministers. Try to understand the background of this charitable contribution before you comment unless your remark is meant to be sarcastic.

By the way how many of our Billionaires ever donated their entire wealth to Charity? They are the first ones to steal from all of us and build billion dollar houses for themselves. We hate West but we forget to recognize the philanthropy and contribution they make to Charitable causes - Case in point Self made billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffet and 1000's of other millionaires and billionaires from west who have contributed their entire wealth to Charity. I had the privilege of working for this great man for over 5 years in the 90s. He was a great leader who is also a tough task master. He would hire the best and ensure that they all exceed his expectations. In return, he would reward them abundantly. I have been a regular recipient of his awards and rewards in recognition of my various initiatives in technology that helped the Bank differentiate over its competitors. His philanthropic deeds were always beyond expectations. Every year during Ramadhan, his major activity was in helping those in need. Every day several people would line up with their problems in front of his office during the day and majlis during the night and each one would leave smiling having their problems solved. I have always been proud of being associated with him. In fact, I learnt a lot on entrepreneurship during my association with this great man. Great to hear that he has pledged his entire fortune for charitable purposes. HRH, may God continue to bless you always and may your tribe multiply. Always proud to have been associated with you.

Whereas, some multi-million black money is held in foreign banks and under the mattress. They expand their business empires, build palace worth Rs. 6000.- crore and enter in the list of Forbes most wealthiest personalities.
Why Baba Ramdev needs so much wealth?

We all look up since all the religions of the faith that GOD is up beyond the clouds. Mr.Modi likes to be closer to GOD, so the best route is the repeated plane trips. He doesn't like to see the suffering people anywhere, but only either in the plane or shaking hands with the Indians abroad who are not poor.

Leading by example during the month of Ramadan. If the super rich in our country follow the suit or at least share the loot hoarded overseas, among the deserving needy, subcontinent
would be a better place to live.

Recently our MEA did some act on 'Humanitarian Grounds' to help a fugitive from Indian Law and he camped around with a Miss Naomi Campbell or somebody and made 'full use' of the gesture.
    This 'Humanitarian
' gesture of the Saudi Prince really needs to be lauded.
