NHRC notice to UP government on undertrial's death

Lucknow, July 20 (IANS): The NHRC on Monday issued notice to Uttar Pradesh chief secretary while taking suo motu cognizance of an undertrial's death in Jaunpur district jail earlier this month.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) notice to Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan was issued in the wake of some media reports stating that 35-year-old Shyam Kumar Yadav died due to an assault by prison guards.

The NHRC observed that the media report, if true, raised a serious issue of violation of the victim's human rights. It gave the Uttar Pradesh government two weeks to submit a factual report in the matter.

Yadav had allegedly attempted to sexually assault a female warden, prompting the guards to attack him on July 4. His death resulted in a clash between prisoners and guards. Police had to be called in to control the situation.

The clash left several prison inmates and policemen injured. Two FIRs were filed at Line Bazar Police Station and a judicial enquiry was ordered into the incident.
