Peru gets 27 China-made rocket launchers

Lima, Jul 21 (IANS/EFE): Peru has acquired 27 China-made 90B self-propelled rocket launchers for army artillery units, the defence ministry said.

Each truck carries 40 units of 122-mm rocket launchers with a range of 20-40 km, the ministry said in a statement.

President Ollanta Humala participated in a ceremony in which the rocket launchers were delivered to the army at the military academy's plaza of honour in Lima's Chorrillos district.

Defence Minister Jakke Valakivi, armed forces joint command chief Gen. Jorge Ricardo and the commanders of the army, Ronald Hurtado; navy, Carlos Tejada; and air force, Dante Arevalo, also attended the ceremony.

Hurtado said the purchase of the weapons system was an important step for the army because it would benefit the new generations of artillery men.
