New Delhi, May 22: Former Indian spinner Maninder Singh was arrested on Tuesday with one and a half grams of cocaine in Preet Vihar area of the capital. He was taken to the Shakarpur police station for questioning. Reportedly a Nigerian citizen, who was delivering the drugs to Maninder has also been arrested. The matter has been sent to the Narcotics Bureau for further probe.

The Delhi Police has declined to comment on the issue as of now. A case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrophic Substances Act was registered against the 41 year old Maninder.

Singh`s arrest from his apartment came on the basis of a tip off, an official said.

The amount found in Singh’s possession was under the 3 grams mark which generally comes under personal consumption. But the presence of a drug-peddler at his house raises questions about his involvement in the larger drug-nexus.

Maninder Singh represented India in 35 Tests and 59 ODIs. His claim to fame came in the Madras Test where he was Greg Matthew’s final victim in a match that resulted in a tie in the 1986-87 series against Australia. Even though he has retired as a cricketer, he is still connected with the game in the form of a cricket commentator.

Maninder played international cricket for India for a period of 11 years. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in the year 1983 at Karachi. His ODI debut, also in the same year, was against Zimbabwe at New Delhi. He had to his name 88 scalps in Tests and 66 in ODIs.
