Kundapur, Jul 24: Putting her life into danger, a brave girl saved her sister from the jaws of death. The incident took place near Kodachadri mountain range on the banks of river Souparnika on July 20.

Jyothi Marathi is the name of braveheart. She saved her younger cousin Mamatha Marathi from drowning.

Jyothi

Mamatha

As per the information, Jyothi had gone to her school with Mamatha and three other friends on July 20. After crossing the river Souparnika, they came to know that the school had declared a holiday due to heavy rains. On the previous day it had rained cats and dogs which had made the rivers swell. While returning Mamatha slipped and fell into the river.

In that area surrounded by forest a shout for help would not reach anybody as there are no houses nearby. The only solution was to jump into the river and save the girl. Without thinking twice, Jyothi dived into the river and managed to catch hold of Mamatha, but found it difficult to bring her back. It was not easy with the force of the water. It is said the water flowing with such force that it dragged them two hundred meters away from the original place.

Eventually, Jyothi swam against the tide and brought Mamatha back to the shore. Jyothi and Mamatha sustained minor bruises only. They were treated at a local hospital.

Jyothi studies in 10th standard while Mamatha is a 9th standard student. They study at the high school run by Kollur Shree Mookambika temple.

Mamatha had an open heart surgery few months back. She is presently taking rest at home. Jyothi has started going back to school. Her bravery has been well appreciated by villagers and she has become talk of the town. The school management has told villagers not to send their children to school risking lives on days of heavy rains.

Great and courageous job by Jyothi. Taking personal risk of life and saving someone is very heroic. May God give you long life! The parents should take a decision, in case of heavy rains, not to send their children to school. Alternatively, some of the villagers should accompany the children to school.

I feel the schools should use some ways of communication to inform the students/parents well in advance about the holidays instead of children's going till the school and coming back.
Great stuff Jyothi you deserve appreciation.

Really a brave girl. Only few get such split second idea to save life of others. I congratulate Jyothi, her Parents and school management. Let school management adhere to their word to allow students from other side of the flow (river) to abstain from attending the classes during heavy rains. God bless both.
