Mumbai, Aug 4: Five of a family from Bantwal were among the 11 who lost their lives when a three-storied building, Krishna Nivas, located in B-Cabin area by the side of suburban Thane station here came crashing down at around 2.50 am on Tuesday August 4.

It is said that this building, located in Pagdi Chawl, was inhabited by some persons of Bantwal origin, whose forefathers for long lived behind Lord Venkataramana Temple, Bantwal, since the last four decades. The deceased have been identified as Ramachandra Panduranga Bhat (62), his Meera Panduranga Bhat (58), their daughters Ruchitha Bhat (23) and Rashmi Ramachandra Bhat (25), and Subraya (Subhas) Bhat (56).

Ramachandra Bhat was a social worker and was engaged in catering. He was an active member of GSB Seva Samaj in Thane. Among the two daughters, Rashmi had married Karan Mangey of Gujarat just two months ago and had shifted to Dubai. She came to her parental house just two days ago. The younger daughter Ruchita was yet to be married and was staying with her parents. Subraya, the brother of Ramachandra Bhat and employee of Gulf Oil in Mumbai, was staying with the family.

Ramachandra Bhat's other brothers Sadashiva Bhat, Pramod Bhat and his wife Shankari (Bantwal), Padmanabha Bhat (BC Road) and Vaman Bhat (Hyderabad) have arrived in Thane. As per their wish, the final rites would be held in Thane, family sources said.

Leaders of the GSB community expressed shock and condolences at the sad demise of Ramachandra Bhat and his family.

The 50-year-old building that collapsed was in a dilapidated state and posed risk to its inhabitants. Officials of Thane Municipal Corporations and ward officials had served notices on the residents of this building to vacate it. Locals said that the devastation and loss of lives happened because of the fact that the residents of the building refused to vacate the building.

Reportedly, there has been a long-standing wrangle in the court between the owners of the building and builders over this building. So far, 11 bodies have been identified, while ten more have rescued and hospitalized. It is gathered that the condition of seven among the injured is critical. Firemen as well as local volunteers have been engaged frantically in rescue work. Thane police officials have registered a case and taken up investigation.

Spokespersons of the government and Maharashtra administration said that they have taken serious view of this incident, duly adding that appropriate steps are being taken.

Building is 50 years old and 3 storey structure. This is the second incident in puna after six month nearby mumbra . Administrate already declared its dangerous to stay . When administrate s building is dangerous to stay they should arrange alternative shelter for the stay of residents .
Similar structures exists in mudder and swamilapadaav . Government should find amicable solution for the residents of the buildings in this area.

May the deaprted souls rest in peace. No one should have such death! .. My heart goes out them, specially that, even to take the mortal remains "there is no home and no Tulasi" today! that is the saddest part.

Now, coming to the issue - Sorry for being critical here. Having lived in Mumbai for so long and seen such building myself and part of pagri system!, "this pagri system is peculiar to Mumbai".. the land owner is one, chawl owner is one, room owner is one" and most of the pagri owner has expired and their 4th generation etc comes and takes money from you if you are owner of the house! they wont let you repair the structure from outside (inside you can furnish it)- you cant make structural change - you cant sell it - but live as long as you like! this is the back of pagri system!..

Now, this real estate lobby understands the value of this plot, strikes a deal with Pagri owner (not the house owner) and starts a rumor using the Municipality system, that this place is Not livable- structure dilapidated - please VACATE! ... actually it may be okay to live, it may not be! ...thats when builder makes a counter offer... a decent 1bHK, 2BHK, based on your property size and worth! few become greedy and reject and whole thing stops... that is when, "devils do come" and few structures fall mysteriosuly...! any building to collpase andf reduce to rubbles in this shape, it is impossible - either a earth quake or MUSALADHARA rain should come! ...few of the old sturcutres are still there in Mumbai, right from Mills to chawls, nothing has happened to them.. mande maari la barpuji! aanda undu yeeth gatti building boorodda, specially when builder and house owners r at loogerheads - kuch jama nahi! and aisa baarish huva bhi nahi Thane mein!

ottare kaala bannaga daala malpare aapuji.. let them rest in peace!

there should be a movement so that room owner should make the owner of the place and builder should give a livable space to the room owner.

Like "Krishna Nivas", there are lot of very old apartments allover India. How BJP Govt is intended to buy back 20 years old vehicle, like that 50 years old building will also be permitted for reconstruction with the help of subsidized bank loan by the Central Govt. What do you say?

A concrete structure can live upto 100 years or more!! for this to happen, there should not be any leakage and the water should not reach the steel bars.

If the water enters the iron rods will catch rust as we all know. this rust gradually weaken the structure and it may fall at any time.

that's why latest builders try their best to protect a building from leakage.

Buildings nearer to sea shore with winds carrying salt cause iron bars to rust more easily than interior areas. This too might have hastened the collapse of the above building.

Had the tenants acted as per Thane Municipal Corporations and ward officials guidelines so many lives would have been saved.

They should have acted on self conscience, sensing the dangers posing around them and not expecting to benefit from unsettled issues.

Your point is valid but the tenants cannot be blamed in each instance. We have seen in countless instances when tenants were sent to transit camps and told that they would get their accommodation when the building was ready, but were left to rot in the camps while the flats in the newly constructed building were sold to others. Hence tenants are wary of redevelopment schemes without clear guidelines.

There are many such dilapidated structures certified as unfit for inhabitation, warnings/notices from the authorities, but people persist and refuse to vacate despite the impending dangers, and this is the end result!!

Same thing happens in the 'redevelopment' schemes where a few selfish and greedy tenants throw spanners in the process leading to unending delays, which is also one of the result of such man made tragedies!!

    May their souls RIP!!!

Why only to blame Govt? when they have been told to vacate, then why not?

Many buildings are in same state in that lane. Hope they will learn from this.

When re-development discussion goes on, no one co-operates. out of 15-20 families at least 2-3 families will not agree for the re-development or they demand "more". (this opinion is general and not for this particular building)

May the souls of departed rest in peace and survivors find courage/strength to accept this bitter truth.

@Nancy, very practical and frank reply depicting the ground reality on why most of such tragedies take place, which are clearly the result of the wrong 'choices' of persisting even when it was very clear that the building was dilapidated and vulnerable to collapse anytime!!
