No need for police verification for reissue of passports: Govt

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI): No police verification is required for reissue of passports, the government said today. "For reissue of passports, police verification is not required, provided the first passport had been issued on the basis of clear police report," Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

The decision will have a significant impact on applicants facing delay due to mandatory police verification for re-issuance of his or her passport.

As per existing provisions, minors, government servants and senior citizens (65 years and above) are exempted from police verification subject to certain conditions, he said. Singh said there was no proposal under consideration to discontinue 'Tatkaal' system for issuing passports for urgent travel needs.

"It is a fact that with the overall improvement in delivery of passport services, the incidence of Tatkaal passport is coming down progressively from 11 per cent in 2012-13 to six per cent in 2014-15.

"However, there is no proposal to discontinue Tatkaal system, as it serves the purpose of issuing passports for urgent travel needs," the minister said.

Meanwhile, the Home Ministry is working on a country-wide online police verification project for passports that will cut down the time required for issuing the travel document from a month, at present, to just a week.

The project is likely to be launched from Bengaluru in November. Under the project the head of district police-- SP or DCP -- will be given access to databases of National Population Register, Aadhaar and the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) to enable online verification of identity, address and criminal record, if any, of the applicant.

I'm bit agreed on Ken's thought. But as per my knowledge, its not applicable for all conditions like, address change or name change & all. This rule only applicable for adding spouse name without changing old passport address. As we all know, strict Police Verification only applicable in South India. If we saw North India side, all 16-17 year old boys coming as 21 year age in PP. Many Bangladesh people come to india by West Bengal & making Indian PP & flying to their destination. Also Nepalies doing same.. Rules only for straight peoples, not for goons or criminals.. Even some are holding more than one passport.. Wah.. Achee Din ayee..

People do not use Tatkal due to high fee levels. In india not that all can afford. I have been living in UAE and they charge AED 400/- extra for tatkal service. Does not make any sense.

Not only Rs.500/- my dear, time, headache and uncertainty of when the work would be done.
Plans have to be kept on hold.
Paying for doing good work done is always fine, encouragement. But paying to avoid harassment, is it not?
