Udupi, Jun 15: The forest department has charted a plan to encourage growing of trees in an effort to maintain an ecological balance.

Deputy conservator of forest Prakash S Natelkar said over 7 lac seedlings have been planted in three forest nurseries. He said that nearly 2.25 lac seedlings are ready in Mala nursery in Karkala taluk and the remaining 4.80 are in two other nurseries in Kundapur and Udupi taluks.

Prakash further said that these seedlings will be planted in 76 hectares of land in the district, and all the varieties which grow tall will be planted on the road side to protect the plants from cattle. The remaining varieties like teak, acacia, badam, honge, jetropa and nelli will be planted in different places. The demand for   Mahogany and grafted cashew seedlings has also increased, he said.

District commissioner V Ponnaraj has instructed the officials to take up the work of planting the seedlings on a priority basis in the urban and rural areas, he said.
