Bengaluru, Aug 29: State Government employees having below poverty line (BPL) cards?

Yes. If you have the right connections and the inclination to cut corners, anything is possible.

Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Department has found families of 150 government employees possessing below poverty line (BPL) ration cards illegally during the drive to weed out bogus BPL ration cards in the State.

The department, which launched the drive to eliminate bogus ration cards two weeks ago, found 16,300 bogus BPL ration cards across the State.

The department has collected fine of Rs 7 lakh from families possessing illegal BPL cards.

The department has extended deadline for two more months to families to remit illegal BPL cards voluntarily.

Karnataka’s Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao told presspersons on Saturday that an officer in the Animal Husbandry department in Chennagiri was found guilty in possessing BPL cards and penalty was imposed.

Many APL families, including government employees, secured BPL cards since holding such cards make them to eligible to avail benefits under various schemes, including claiming health insurance.

Illegal possession of ration cards would be unearthed through collecting information of families owning four wheelers from RTO offices and examining residential addresses, he said.

Out of 1.31 crore families in the State, more than a crore families (1.10 crore) are living BPL category and they secured BPL ration cards.

The department has stepped a drive to crackdown bogus BPL cards to ensure subsidised food items to eligible beneficiaries.

The minister said he had instructed food inspectors and owners of over 20,000 ration shops to crackdown bogus ration cards.

The existing Act to be amended to file criminal cases against families holding illegal BPL cards, he said.

Families secured BPL cards for obtaining monthly subsidised rations under the public distribution system. In some districts, nearly 90 per cent of households are living BPL category.

Only 11.77 lakh families had secured above poverty line (APL) cards.

The department has received 9.64 lakh applications seeking BPL and APL ration cards and 22,000 cards have been issued to beneficiaries, he said.

It is very hard to digest. In spite of many governments came and gone in the state, none of the government could streamline the ration card issue.Even the present government except simply harassing the public, nothing could be done in this regard in spite of being in power for the past two years. This is only because of corruption in the department starting from bottom to top and maladministration of our government. Our honorable Food and civil minister Gundu Rao is one of the worst ministers in Siddu (Nidde Ramayya)Government. This issue of ration card cannot be either sorted out or streamlined as long as these corrupt ministers are there in the state cabinet.According to me Karnataka state is the only state in the country where you will find so many corrupt ministers in all the fields. No department is exception. Before Britishers were looting our country, now our own politicians/ministers are looting our country left and right.Wherever you go,there you will find corruption. No end for it.Paise Feko, thamasha dekho. That in crores not small amount.Common and middle class people are the real sufferers.God only should save us.Those who got enough money, they only can survive, for others no way

ARE THEY NOT AWARE OF SYSTEM BEING GOVT. EMPLOYEES ? THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THEM. BETTER SUSPEND THEM AND LET THEM CONTINUE WITH THE BPL CARDS AND THOSE WHO HAVE APL CARDS ONLY TILL DATE WITH ALL SINCERITY SHOULD BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO SERVE BASED ON MERITS.
WILL THE STATE GOVT. DARE TO DO SUCH AN BRAVE ACT SO THAT IT WILL BE LESSON ON BOTH SIDES OR GO BEHIND VOTE BANK IS TO BE SEEN.
IF ANY PARTY GO BEHIND VOTE BANK IT IS TEMPORARY AND IN THE LONG RUN IT WILL BITE THE DUST NO DOUBT.

The screw is tightening up with center not providing free meal to BPL families like in the past.
States have no other alternative but to streamline the system & weed out bogus card holders.
Center has stopped giving subsidy to midday meal projects as well. With funds crunch its time to end this menace once & for all.

In the United States & other developed countries people have to work hard. Some time work 2 jobs to send money and support extended family or friends in India. During my recent visit to Mangalore some of my parents relatives & friends who financially supported by my parents and who have sold their land and property are holding BPL cards, Konkani cards, Old age pension, disability pension etc,. India should have strict accountability of its Citizens and their personal wealth and source of income before the eligibility to any public assistance. Media & Fellow citizens should publish the name and assets of welfare beneficiaries in Local news papers to prevent the country from Bankruptcy/financial ruins.
