Mangaluru: Doctors protest against assaults, demand strong action

Mangaluru, Aug 29: Hundreds of doctors, nurses and medical students took out a protest rally from Netaji Yellappa Hospital to Rani Abbakka Circle at Ullal on Saturday August 29 protesting against the recent cases of assault on doctors and hospital staff in the event of a patient’s death.

The protest was organised by Indian Medical Association(IMA) and Association of Medical Consultants, Mangalore (AMC) , Indian Dental Association also supported the protest.

The protestors condemned the assault on doctors and staff on duty at Yenepoya Hospital, Deralakatte on August 17 where some people assaulted doctors and staff when they were informed about the death of a patient who was suffering from an acute kidney ailment.

"Even though the mob assaulted the doctors, paramedical staff, and hospital staff and damaged furniture in the hospital, it is unfortunate that the police did not come forward to arrest the culprits. Such incidents are on the increase. The relatives and friends of patients get angry if the patient dies or does not get cured as desired and resort to violence. The protest rally is being held to send a strong message to such people," they said.

“The police should arrest the people who indulge in such incidents. They should take action even when oral complaints are made. As the accused easily get bail, they indulge in such violence. The law should be such that only the court can allow them bail. If the doctors are not taken into confidence, they will not be able to provide the expected treatment to the patients. Besides this, some doctors may ask the patient’s relatives to take the patient to another hospital out of fear and the patient may die on the way," they said.

Dr Mukund, Dr Polnaya, Dr Satish Bhat, Dr Ganapathi Bhat, Dr Manjunath Rai, Dr Bharath Shetty, Dr Prakash Harischandra, Dr Ullas Shetty, Dr Kishore Kumar, Dr Vaswani, and others were present.

This habit of attacking doctors has started after the present Minister of state for health (who unfortunately is NOT A DOCTOR) who supports one community and encourages these goons to resort to this inhuman act. Let this particular minister spend 24 hrs in a hospital with a junior doctor and see for himself the trouble and tension they take for the well being of the patient, so much so that at times they do not have time for one meal a day also. It is unfair to think that doctors are the slaves of the public. With these mounting atrocities the day is not far off when doctors will decide to stay away from practice.

Dear Friends, I am a doctor working at senior level in UK. I love my home Mangalore and was planning to return and start work in Mangalore so that my home town people can benefit from what I have learnt in so many years in UK. In the last few years when ever I visited India I have been seeing patients referred by my friend doctors for expert advice. I did not charge a single paise to these patients and was happy that my knowledge is helping the local people. After reading all these news I have made 2 decisions
    1. I will not be relocating to Mangalore
    2. I was in India recently and when my friends asked me to see some patients for advice I said I have stopped seeing patients when I come for holiday and have stopped my free service as I do not want to get beaten.
It pained me to read that the honourable health minister was recently warning doctors against going on strike rather than reassuring them when doctors were assaulted in Puttur.

Mr.JayaPrakash Shetty, UK/Mangalore I left India 40 years ago without any education or wealth. I loved Mangalore & India dearly. Visited India often. Generously helped extended family & friends. I feel I made a big mistake. made people dependent. I do not see any gratitude from my people in India. So I am telling my grandchildren that We in the west have Law, justice & human heart. India has only grate religions of the world without love and concern for fellow Citizens.

You are requesting all the doctors from India to migrate to other places. Doctors’ profession is not meant only to mint money but thy serve people and Millions of poor people in India are treated by them. Where underprivileged people will go for their ailments? To USA. What a logic you are talking about?

Deralakatte is famous for all wrong reasons.

In a year or two, this is the second attempt of assaults on doctors and para medical staff taking place right at Yeneppoya Hospital. The people who indulge in violence are pretty sure, nothing would happen to them. In cases like these the Hospital management should come forward and protect their employees and initiate legal action against who manhandle the staff. But it appears the management is worried of loosing the patronage than defending their staff.

i dont think its worth risking your life or mental peace by practicing medicine in India. Indians generally are ignorant and as well arrogant and take health for granted. Already, health care cost is sky rocketing in India and if corporate completely takes over health care in coming years, who will give services to these thugs who waste no time in assaulting doctors and still get away because they have political back up. Wise thing for skilled and hardworking doctors is to go to either west or middle east. They value your degree and services and pay you well too!

Any profession is noble. I deplore the act.

My daughter is a doctor. I dont agree brightest become doctors. They become engineers or scientists. Medical profession is completely commercialized and those who are rich become doctors barring those who study on merit seats.

Our Police will take stern action provided our elected representatives don’t interfere in the case….. What is happening in our region that if any culprits arrested by Police, their beloved Party goers goes to the Police Station first even before Police Team reaches there!!!! So, it’s all depends who is attacking whom and which Party and community they belongs to!!!!

I have very good doctor friends in Manipal and I can tell that, they are a very good human beings . Doctors are giving service to the humanity irrespective of what they charge. They are almost sacrificing their life for the betterment ( well selfishness is there as they are nut gods they are also human beings like us) . We must first try to live a life of a doctor to understand what it is like to be one. It is one of the respected profession and it must be like that because they save countless lives. We patients try to demand a lot of attention from doctors when our patient is admitted forgetting that, as a human they may be able to work maximum 10 to 12 hrs which they are doing. They have to see maximum patients as everyone's life is important for a doctor unlike us. we must understand that, life is not in hands of any human being but, our fate decides how long we live. Even a worse kind of ailment or tragedy a person services and a small incidents can take a human life. I am telling you this after losing my mother in Manipal hospital where I have very good friends. Doctors are doing only their job and it is left to God on our life expectancy.

This is a very special rally as we have not seen doctors protesting on the roads for their rights and protection. Doctors are seen with reverence as they are seen as savior of human lives. But that reverence has not remained in the present world due to the commercial mind of some doctors and hospitals. As some doctors are careless in performing their duties, it effects entire doctors and medical professionals, like scissors found inside the body after the operation and the like. Unlike other professions doctors have great responsibility and commitment as they deal with human lives, and patients and their family and friends should not resort to violence and disturbance if something goes wrong as all cases may not be due to the fault of doctors. However, it is the responsibility of doctors and general public to maintain the dignity of doctors profession.

It is true what the medical staff said. When a Patient dies, whatever the reason is,why should one immediately blame the Hospital staff without knowing the reason.still it is bitter or not to bear is People who are not at all related to Patient ,come in a big Group ,and start shouting and looting, making a big noise at the Hospital creating nuesense. They dont even know what has happened and why.People be Little human and have some understanding ,inside there are patients suffering and sick. They Need some silence, require to recover .They are not there to enjoy.so dont do such things in future .People who violate the Hospital environment and peace, should be taken to Task and punish.Police should follow this.why they have not done is mystery.(They may be are afraid of their lives)Hospital can file a case against People who has violated. When unknown People come o Hospital and do goondagiri or assault Hospital staff dead Patient will not come back and against the respect to the dead.

Only the best & brightest persons become Doctors after working/studying hard and spending the life savings of the family. I am asking all the doctors to migrate to Western & other countries where your service will be appreciated and you will be rewarded with lot of money and better living standards. All doctors should take my suggestion seriously.
