Mangaluru, Sep 2: Supporting the nationwide bandh on Wednesday September 2, various trade unions like CITU, AITUC, INTUC, HMS along with those affiliated to various organizations held a protest near the DC's office here against the 'anti-labour' policies of the BJP-led central government.

The strike was called in support of the 12-point charter of demands of 10 central trade unions. Fourteen unions in the banking sector too have given a call for the strike, protesting against the NDA government's proposed bills amending labour laws, the Contract Act, the Electricity Act and Factory Act. The bandh recieved good response in Mangaluru with a majority of shops and businesses shutting down and schools and colleges remaining closed due to absence of buses. However, by afternoon, some of the shops opened and people were seen at markets.

Addressing the protest, state secretary of INTUC, Sadashiva Shetty said, "This labour policy by the union government is a threat to the security of the working class. It is against the welfare of the labour class. This will deprive basic benefits to labourers.

"In future, the labour class should be ready to go severe protests demanding withdrawal of the proposed policies by the union government. The proposed policies are not visionary and not in favour of labourers," he added.

AIBEA leader Vincent said, "The proposed labour policies of BJP-led NDA union government deprives the labourers from many benefits and instead favours the employer. The centre's policies are not in favour of the working class, but leaning towards interests of the corporates. This amendment will curb the rights of the working class. In the proposed amendment, the minimum wage is Rs 3,600 per month, which will weaken the labourers. Even the ESI and PF are given as options to labourers. This will hamper the growth of the labour class. If the government doesn't agrees to our demand we will hold severe protests in future."

Rafeeq of HMS termed the proposed labour policies as 'anti-labour'.

CITU leader Vasantha Acharaya welcomed the gathering.

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Sep 2: The nationwide strike and bandh, called by 10 central trade unions, is being observed in Mangaluru city. The roads were seen empty as the vehicles did not ply.

However, the bandh began on a disturbing note as stone-pelting was reported in a few parts of the city. Stones were also pelted at some of the college buses.

A tyre burning incident was reported from Bangra Kulur and three buses damaged by stone pelting at Padil. All the three buses - Mysuru-Udupi, Shamboor-Mangaluru and Mangaluru-Madanthyar belong KSRTC. Matapathi the  driver of one of these buses has been injured.

Except for the stone-pelting incidents, the situation has remained largely peaceful. The police have stepped up security in the city.

The passengers who arrived in buses and trains in the early hours were stranded as they did not find transport to take them to their destinations.

Private and government bus unions are also participating in the bandh. Schools and colleges remain closed with the ongoing exams being postponed.

The railways is not participating in the strike. A few auto rickshaws are seen on the road.

Essential services like supply of dairy products, fire and ambulance will not be affected, it is believed.

What do you mean by Fifteen years since you saw Mangalore last.

    Everything is changed in Mangalore.
The worst effect is on Traffic jams and pollution. I am helpless to cross the road at any junctions, specially Bendoor, Highlands, Mallikatte,Joythi circle, Karangalpady .........
This may be also due to age factor.

New labour policies of the present BJP led NDA government will directly affect 40 crore to 60 crore population of India. Around 44 trade-labour laws that exists today will be reduced to just 4 laws. New laws will take away the rights of labour-trade unions to protest against the government. Under BJP new law, labour unions can't be registered in future. Every worker coming under trade-labour unions is producing around rs.2,000 on an average, which directly makes the corporate honchos of India and abroad very rich, but these labourers get just rs.20 to rs.40 per day. Forty crore people will loose their fundamental right for dignified living.

Modi government is appeasing big corporates in the name of development. Anti-people laws are basically a requirement for DEVELOPMENT.

Today Modi government has been asked by RSS to implement One rank one pension policy. The so called swadeshi vs videshi debate by BJP-RSS is just an eyewash. BJP is more cooperate friendly, anti-people than previous governments. Entire bhatath is bhandh against policies of NDA government. Indian workforce consists of 80 percent of population, it's time to understand how magic is different from hard realities that will slowly eliminate us and drive in the direction of absolute power by few individuals. Religious hatred is fodder to RSS BJP to come to power, then start doing things that are beyond people's perception.

In reality, one full day would not be enough to come across all these places.
Mangalore is gripped with so many different strikes. What a pity?

A humble request - if the photographs can be captioned to show the respective localities - I am sure all of the readers like me will be most happy and grateful.

I FULLY AGREE WITH THE BANDH TO PROTEST FOR WHATEVER REASON. BUT WHY DESTROY PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PROPERTY FOR NO REASON? THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE IN INDIA AND WE ACT WORSE THAN ANIMALS. WE EMBRACE MOB MENTALITY, BECOME MINDLESS, LOSE ALL SANITY,SENSE AND START PELTING STONES. THIS RESULTS IN HEAVY DAMAGE AND LOSSES. WE HAVE TO START A STRONG AGITATION AND BUILD PUBLIC OPINION AGAINST DAMAGE TO PUBLIC PROPERTY DURING ANY AND ALL BANDHS AND DEMONSTRATIONS. OFFENDERS SHOULD BE CAUGHT, JAILED AND MADE TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGES.

I think we need one day Bandh per month whenever we have 31 days of working so that people can relax completely at their house rather than wandering outside

The time is to think different and implement change to see a World of Difference
If we feel that we are suffering by carrying the bullock-cart on wheels since 200 years, then we can opt for an ample solution.
As we move the burden of millions of tons of dead-weight of commuters and goods on wheels every day, if we wish we can use the same weight as a powerful pushing force.
The opportunity is not only to save a huge volume of fuel but also to generate a considerable volume of free and clean energy.
A simple concept can save fuel, generate energy, eliminate air pollution and sound pollution and reduce overall costs drastically.
The huge burden can be a blessed boon.
