Mangaluru: Christians seek financial aid from govt for pilgrimage to Holy Land

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Sep 16: Christian leaders belonging to various denominations of Karnataka region submitted a memorandum to MLA JR Lobo, chairman of legislative committee on the welfare of backward classes and minorities at his office in Mangaluru on Wednesday, September 16.

The memorandum seeks financial aid and other benefits from the government for the Christian community to travel to the Holy Land particularly Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Mount Sinai in Africa.

The memorandum says that Christians from the state have been visiting these holy places for years and the number has gone up significantly of late. Christians being the second biggest minority community of Karnataka, should also get travel benefits the way the Muslims get for their Haj pilgrimages, the memorandum says.

Jayakar Samartha, representing CSI, Karnataka South, Dr Suranjan Maben, Sashipal Shettiyan and Fr J B Crasta, parish priest of Holy Rosary Cathedral, MP Noronha secretery of diocese committee, Fr William Menezes, PRO of Mangaluru diocese and Anil Lobo from Catholic Sabha were part of the delegation that submitted the memorandum.

Christians and Muslims should learn from other minorities like Sikh,Jains, Parsis, Buddhist, they preach non violence, work hard, do not convert, contribute to nation building and security and are not anti nationals, they do charity for humanity, but do not beg for govt aid for their community. it is a shame tat people have to travel so far in search of their gods? What about the thousands of church and Mosques built here you mean to say there is no god there. Learn to respect your country and countrymen each citizen however poor he may be is paying for Haj and other religious subsidy

nice ONE FRIEND, the humbugs of political parties are encouraging our weakling religious leaders to unnecessary compare and beg like spineless gutless morons. The ones who should get aid is the priests in siliguri district of West Bengal and such backward areas. The Bishop is just business of sheep mongering, well he has enough donations received from various sources to help the community and its widespread mission. because i have seen the priest in siliguri in a average condition.

Happy to see that most of the sensible Christians supported this move of demanding Ministry of Tourism to give concession in air ticket. This demand helps improve tourism in many ways as many common people can visit Holy Land.
Visiting Holy Land is their personal wish. Nobody can stop it whether he can afford or he cannot afford that is none of others business to indulge in it.
Minority Department in the govt has given a lot of help to Christians in the field of education. The churches have been given financial aid for repairs and construction of community halls etc etc. We are all aware of it. Muslims are going to Huj pilgrimage for the past many years. All of you are also aware of it. So I hope The Ministry of Tourism may be given Concession to this pilgrimage. This will help many to see the Holy Land. Our elected leader like J.R. Lobo, Moidhin Bava should help to fulfill this request.

Dear Ash/uae, At last some have nearing the Goal Post but still many are circling in the middle point only. I think the idea of demand is nothing but concession in the ticket fare as you have touched it rightly. Is it wrong, unfair or looking as if one is begging demanding concession? Asking for concession through Tourism ministry is our right. When Muslims are claiming,we have to claim as Christian Minority. So many rich people I beleive have commented in this forum, about begging from the govt, some have preached about Jesus, my dear fellow christians you are crucifying the common man from availing benefits from the Ministry of Tourism i.e.,Concession in the air ticket. That is what the church leaders requested the concerned persons to avail this benefit for the common man(not for you so called rich) in the christian community. I am a common man and I wish to go to the HolyLand Tour to visit the place my Jesus lived and died. That is my interest. If govt gives concession in the air ticket it will be easy for me to go as a a pilgrim. So this benefit or subsidy is only for the common man. Let us hope to get it in the near future. Hope for the best!

I visited the Tomb of Jesus Christ. The sign says " HE is not here" which means Christ has risen and HE is dwelling in our hearts. Why go that far just to see the tomb?

It is a booming business for travel agency and a status symbol for wealthy to visit Jerusalem.

Do they feel any different after visiting Jerusalem? I liked the Belly dance they performed for the visitors more than the Tomb.

@wafa till the time the govt decides why dont you share funds out of Haj subsidy? coz every Indian tax payer is paying for Haj subsidy but people who are NRI are looking only for free rides without deserving it. Many of my Muslim friends tell me taking subsidy for Haj is against Islam but the practice continues. Am sure if Hindus or other minorities ( though they are not so wretched) ask for subsidy RSS will be blamed for it but it is ok pseudo secularist priest and maulana to ask for subsidy based on religion ? and still shout from rooftops that they are secular?

Its good thing if govt give subsidy(air ticket) to pilgrimage,
in islam there is a strict rule in haj pilgrimage that is only those who are financially capable and he should take an oath that herby he will not indulge in any sin.

Govt should be like parent and citizen should be like children,so there should not be any nondiscrimination.
if govt gives discount in air ticket for haj, they should give same to Christians also.

Muslims are required to visit Holy Land once in their life time, only if they can afford it. Christians are not required to visit Jerusalem. Therefore, these pilgrimage should not be subsidized by the Govt.

Government can pay for the plane fare for those who are going to Gulf countries/Israel seeking for employment. These are needy people and some day will contribute to the nation's economy by their remittances to home.

Only rich people can afford to visit Jerusalem and poor tax payers shouldn't pay for their trips. It is like "Buying a drink for the bootlegger"

Tomorrow, some other groups may ask a subsidized trip to Moon/Mars

First of all, I believe the title of this news item i.e." Christians SEEK FINANCIAL AID FROM GOVT for holy land pilgrimage" created little harsh sound of misunderstanding among so called christians. Here nobody is seeking aid. For example.Gas subsidy. All needs govt subsidised cylinders only, even if they can afford to pay full.Nobody is paying full payment to the gas cylinder, why, because there is subsidy. Likewise, Muslims as minorities are awailing govt pilgrimage subsidy for many years. So far nobody has commented about this. Christians are the second biggest minority community according to the latest census have not demanded so far and they are also eligible for the subsidy for the pilgimage like huj subsidy to Muslims. Christians are not seeking aid from the govt but they are trying to awail the benefits which muslims are enjoying for many years as the major minority community in India. In this respect the move is acceptable and should be recognised by the govt. I agree the demand is moved in the right time with the right person.

Dear Kripa Sagar, I fully agree with your comment on the subject of "subsidy to pilgrimage to Holy land" which has not so far attracted the christian community to govt but at last some good people who thought about this to help the community availing this type of subsidy like our Huj Subsidy which is praise worthy. I sadly observed many comments which is not sensible by Christian commentators. The Central Govt Reserved Fund is used only for Muslims HUJ pilgrimage. Now it can be used for Christians provided the govt gives green signal to this appeal. I fully support this demand to be given green signal so that some poor christian also visit the holy place as we Muslims do it visiting Mecca. The negative comments are quite ridiculous where I found sense of disintegration between Christian brotherhood!

Most of the commentators believe in religion of humanity. All these practices have resulted from vote bank politics from previous governments. If India is a secular country, and we all enjoy being treated as equal citizens, then why do we ask the government for money to go on pilgrimages.

Perhaps, they got the idea of subsidy because there is a community that is getting subsidy for going on pilgrimages.

The best use of money would be if the government built schools and hospitals to serve the poorest of the poor, and those living below the poverty line.

The first century Churches and the 21st century Churches are entirely different.

The Bishop of Jerusalem, Apostle James who wrote the first book of the New Testament states very clearly, what is religion?
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world" James 1:27.

A true sacrament is not a mere creed, or ordinance, of form, but it is a life of service to God and humanity. The most eloquent-deeper and committed prayer is the prayer through hands that heal and bless.
The most highest form of worship is the worship of unselfish Christian service. The greatest form of praise is the sound of consecrated feet seeking out of the lost and helpless.

In Christ's time, we could see a special breed of people called Pharisees who majored on the show but minored on service. As Christians, we need fewer words and more charitable works less palaver and more pity less repetition of creed and more compassion.

How we can rate the Church world today? The Church world will very easily beat the business corporations of the world.

Who authorised these persons to seek aid from the Government to visit the Holy Land? Was there any discussion in the parishes in this matter. Is there any obligation to visit the Holy Land? Why should you seek aid to visit the Lord's place. If you want to visit pay from your pocket. You don't have to go Holy Land to seek the Lord. If you want to seek aid from the Government, get it for the weaker and poorer sections of your society. Fight for them. For God's sake do not lower the prestige of the Christian Community by seeking aid for visit to the Holy Land.Your conviction and faith in the Lord, will help you garner the necessary resources to visit the Holy Land, rather than begging for crumbs from the Government. The Lord will be pleased with you,if your serve the cause of your neighbour and the downtrodden. The clergy would well, to guide and enlighten their parishioners to avail of benefits, under various schemes of the Government, which the parishioners are woefully unaware of. If a democratic country is not keeping strict separation of religion and State, they would be trapped with many problems.

The fundamental liberty of every citizen of the country to practice and propagate their religion through love and peaceful means must be protected. The politicians have full freedom of assembly and propagating their political ideology, but the religious freedom is systematically prohibited by certain States in India, which was signed by the President and that is great violation of the fundamental freedom and human rights.

The Government must help the economically down trodden people of all religions and no religion but undertaking the expenses of their religious pilgrimage, whatever religious followers it may be, must be totally taken away.

Let the rich people of the respective religions or the religious body may undertake the pilgrimage expenditure.

I am not sure even the Haj subsidy is going to the right person who is financially poor, whereas Islam says one should undertake pilgrimage to mekka if he is financially OK, otherwise it is not compulsory for poor people.

Christian community in India is the one which has maximum commercial land in every city. Turnover of the church is equal to navy budget. And our self declared leaders seek subsidies from government!! Actually they should have offered help to the government for the upliftment of weaker sections which have no resources like we have!! But alas, the clergy after swindling all cream promoting such mentally is really sickening. Parsis are just 0.1% of India’s total population. They never asked for minority status. They never asked for reservations. They never fought with Indian Government. They never threw stones & damaged public or private property. They never ever where biased towards religion. They never restricted what to eat and what not to eat. They never where intolerant and insensitive to the feelings of others. They never where treating women disrespectfully in their homes and outside. They never hoarded money only to themselves. They showed every citizen of this country what is to be a true Indian. They contributed to the progress of India with a social cause. The proof is the compensation for the victims given in the 9/11 case ... They gave us best ... Mr JRD Tata, Mr. Ratan Tata ... Mr. Adi Godrej ... Mr. Cyrus Mistry ... Mr. Homi Bhabha ... No one get salvation or going to Heaven visiting the land, but following his word, accepting Jesus as Lord and savior only can save us. living according his word, following his commandments make us perfect relationship with God than we can experience his presence in our daily life.
He is not waiting in any land, or buildings he is spirit he is everywhere.read the word and try to understand the truth.

Jesus' path to heaven is embodied in the following two instructions:

    (1) Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

    (2) You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

In the religion that Jesus taught, there is no concept of any pilgrimage. One goes to heaven (if there is one) by following the above instructions. Christian pilgrimage was invented by people who had their tummy full, and wanted to explore places.

The Government does not just print money to hand over to the pilgrimages. It collects taxes first. So, if anyone shamelessly asks for handouts for any pilgrimages, they must pay some tax first. This means that the non-tax paying priests and nuns (who will queue first for any freebies) should not get any tax-payer funded benefits at all.

I hope Mr Lobo throws this memorandum into the first rubbish bin he finds.

What nonsense! This is pure jealousy. Hope the Hon. Lobo sees through this submission and ignore it, as he is put in an awkward position, being a Christian. Would Christians dare to submit such a memorandum if Lobo were not a Christian? These so-called leaders are confusing visit to the Holy Land as an obligation. There is no obligation, but pure sightseeing and galavanting, with a few visits to holy places sprinkled in the itinerary. It is unlike the Haj which is obligatory to those who can afford the pilgrimage those who can't, are not compelled by an obligation - just a life's ultimate "wish" so that they too can add the title "Haji". When I resided in a Muslim country, some have double and triple "Haji" titles, signifying the number of times they visited their Holy Land.

When there are so many poor, poverty stricken people, those requiring money for medicine etc. asking for Govt. aid for touring foreign lands in the guise of Holy Land tours looks outrageous and insult to humanity!! Those who can afford go to as may Holy Land tours if they think that by doing this tour they will get reservation in heaven!! The money sanctioned, if any, should be used for the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden and help those in dire straits!! Whoever gave this idea to these gentlemen, may be they want equal rights as their brethren from the other minority community!!

In the first place, pilgrimage is not an obligation for a Christian. It is not a precondition to attain salvation. On the contrary glorifying a particular land or a place as holy and adoring it is also a form of idolatry according to the Holy Scriptures.

Secondly if anybody wishes to travel to the so called holy lands, he do may do so without seeking any governmental assistance.

God is everywhere irrespective of TIME, SPACE AND PLACE.

He can sit in a corner or sit in a middle or by the side or he can hide and seek He is God of gods. King of kings. Lord of lords.

Almighty He is and not limited.

When God is everywhere what is the necessity to go to pilgrimage.

The subsidies whatever offered will entice and make temptations to humans.

A person from his own diligent work with hard earned money and visits holy places then there is value, satisfaction and God will shower His abundant blessings upon him who has worked hard to visit His holy place.

However what a Holy place on earth can be to the Holiest of the Holy God will reside here on this earth.

Therefore, It is our temple which is me and you when we live righteously and lawfully God will reside in our heart and convicts us right path and right ways to move here on earth in humanity.

I strongly condemn this action of our so-called CHRISTIAN LEADERS. It is a shame to the Christian community to beg the government to appease a small section of people. If these 'LEADERS' want Christians to visit Holy Land, let them create a fund with their money - and that of the MLA whom they approached - and provide financial assistance to those wishing to visit Holy Land.

Last year, the same MLA became butt of jokes by requesting the CM to September 8 as holiday. We Christians are supposed to be rational.

Ask them for proper facilities in government hospitals, clean markets, assistance for students for studies etc. Please stop this kind of unwanted negative publicity to community

Good, it's not a bad idea. But why should government grant aid for Holy land pilgrimage, when even this pilgrimage is not obligatory on those who can not afford.

Lourds should also be included in the list.

I extend my complete support for this demand of our Christian friends. And govt. should agree for this demand.

Meanwhile i suggest christians too, agree govt. to take over the management of Churches and other prayer centres. Govt. has already taken over Hindu temples. The money collected can go to development works.

If Pramod.Kumar@peikko.com are not taken over by govt., Hindu fanatic fools like me will always make a point to complaint that 'Money from hindu temples are collected and given as subsidy for muslim and christian pilgrimages'.

Who has given any indication that he/she went straight to heaven because of the pilgrimage taken up ? Well, visiting places, including Holy, should be as per personal choice and capacity - both health and financial.

Please do not beg for funds just because other religions get it. Rather, insist that the funds could be used to educate and employ our youth who in turn will be able to fund their travel around the world.

Except Brahmins and GSBs all are enjoying one or the other benefit from the government.I dont think this would work out on long term basis.

Please do not spoil christian name by demanding such favors from government. Who is financially sound and physically healthy may visit the holy land . Don't use the taxpayers money for such type of unwanted things. Even Jesus also condemned show purpose devotion. Best thing is visit & help the neighbor .

Very well said! That is like a TRUE Christian! It is not mentioned in the Bible to visit any Holy places. Earn your money and fulfill your requirements! If you have in excess try to help the needy!

    Guru,

You are putting it all on JRL as if he advised/invited the subject representatives to submit such a plea !

Mr. Lobo is an elected representative of people - he can't refuse to accept a request.

Disregarding the base source isn't wise. You should have instead asked Jossy to elaborate on his one-liner !
