Avoid cow slaughter in larger interest, Ulema tells Muslims

By Mohammed Shafeeq
Hyderabad, Sep 18 (IANS): With the ban on beef in some states and the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha triggering a fierce debate on cow slaughter across the country, a group of Islamic scholars in southern India has appealed to Muslims to avoid sacrificing cows, bulls and bullocks in the community's larger interest.

The scholars have advised Muslims to show pragmatism in the prevailing situation and instead opt for alternate animals permitted by the Sharia to ensure that peace is maintained and there are no impediments in their larger duty of "dawat-e-deen" of introducing Islam to non-Muslims.

Backed by all schools of thought, the group has taken up the campaign through social media, meetings, pamphlets and Friday sermons in mosques in different states of southern India.

"Our message is that Muslims should not take law in their hands but desist from sacrificing cow, bulls and bullocks for maintaining peace. This will also help in introducing Islam to others," Syed Hussain Madani, an Islamic scholar heading the campaign, told IANS.

The scholar has suggested that the community should avoid sacrificing cows to protect life and property. People trading in cows, bulls and bullocks have been suffering loss of life and property and sometimes ending up harming others.

Madani quoted 'Hadith', or the sayings of Prophet Muhammad, that "There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm."

Noting that the Prophet sacrificed two sheep on Eid-ul-Azha, he said: "Since the Prophet Muhammad is the best model for us, we should follow him. Sacrificing cow is allowed but it is not ‘afzal’ (preferable)," he said.

Every year, hundreds of bulls and bullocks are brought to the city for sacrifice on Eid day. Such animals are in huge demand because seven people can have share in each. At Rs.2,500 to Rs.2,800 each share, this works out more economical than Rs.6,000 to Rs.7,000 for a goat or sheep.

The scholars pointed out that sacrificing per se is not "farz" (obligation) but "sunnat" (practice of the Prophet). "Allah doesn't burden more than one can bear. There is ample room to avoid this (sacrifice of cow) in the prevailing situation when there are legal restrictions and communal disharmony over the issue," said Madani.

As many families take a share in such animals to distribute meat among the poor, Madani said that the poor may be helped in many other ways.

The ulema, while noting that slaughter of cow, bulls and bullocks are linked to the livelihood of a group, argue that the interest of the entire community should get priority.

"Prevention of means of 'fasad' (mischief) is better than the benefits we may get from certain things," said Madani.

The scholars are also of the opinion that the misconceptions about cow slaughter and the misinformation spread by some elements affects "Dawate-e-deen" and since this is an obligatory duty of every Muslim, it should get priority over sacrificing cow, bulls or bullocks.

"Some miscreants themselves sell cows and strengthen their economy but take legal action against those who buy cows and sometimes even kill the buyers. Desisting from the sacrifice of such animals will deny them an opportunity to indulge in mischief," added Madani.

Well-known personalities like Mohammed Abdul Raheem Qureshi, president of the Majlis-e-Tameer-e-Millat and assistant secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Moulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, Moulana Aneesur Rehman Azmi of Chennai, Moulana Mufti Nassem Ahmed Ashrafi, and Moulana Mufti Mahboob Shareef Nizami are backing the initiative.

The appeal also has the backing of Muslim political leaders and legal experts. It also made reference to a suggestion by some political leaders that giving up eating of beef for a couple of years will show its impact on the economy and those opposing it will be forced to amend the legislation.

Since BJP came into power, the most talked about subjects are "beef" and "holy cow".

I do remember a Christian Pastor instructing the believers, especially the young people to carry a Bible with them to display their Christian identity. But I have never seen him carrying a Bible with him.

The Indian President is a great cow god lover, so signed the beef ban laws in Maharastra and Haryana
with prison terms for the beef handlers. The President of India, the largest democracy's President is a great cow lover through putting the citizens into jail??????

Some other Cabinet Ministers like the Home Minister Singh and Naidu from Andhra are great cow mother worshippers.

Without any apology, I am openly challenging them to show their genuine love for cows, simply take care of a cow at their residence personally feed, wash and love the mother.

This is like the loving parents sending their children for begging and to eat from the hotel trash basket! What a great paradox of the 21st century?

The cattle lovers are going to be faced with a reality check very soon to prove their honesty or hypocrisy. In front of the world, under the BJP Government, India has been turned as a joker's object.

If BJP result won't be identical to the New Delhi political result, the foreign countries will be pulling away their investment from India as an unsafe place of political and religious disorder.

Atrocious. Just because you love rice, you have to grow rice? You love beaches means you have to reside near the sea shore? I think utter frustration leads to such thought and i feel pity. Investors never come for charity. They may come or go back based on the business interest. Not because beef not served in the hotel. Such hopes that a pappu and lalu will make india a better place is ridiculous

Mr. Rajesh, do you like to invest your money in Kerala and West Bengal which are deeply infected with the labor strike and go slow practice taught by the failed communist ideology?

How many foreign investment is coming to Pakistan? Why among the GCC countries, UAE is attracting more tourists-foreign investment in real estate and the rest, because the leaders of the UAE are visionaries looking over the spirit of religion. From 200 nations of the world, people are working and living in UAE.

Now under the BJP Government, all the signs are indicating a reverse march to the antiquated culture and way of life. Can you rationalize as an educated person, this irrational legislations in Haryana and Maharastra where thousands of people are thrown out of work through the beef ban, also the high inflation in the meat price, gracefully signed by the President of India. On the other hand, from the rest of the States, beef export is booming.
Do you know any other country in the world, whether democratic or despotic having this kind of rule of law totally mistreating the citizens?

    Dear Mathew,
The very thought that we have to rely on foreign investment should go away. Let the country be better for Indians. if the indian money is invested here, we can surely prosper. such an environment has to be created. I know Modi is yet to impress from his work on the ground, but at least he is on the track. Those who love india must stop hatred and fuelling unnecessary fear in the minds of people. Beef ban may be bad for some people, but the sky is not going to fall due to that. lets be calm and donot act like fanatics.

Good initiative and decision. Let us all respect the suggestion of Ulema. If you cannot afford a goat, then it is not obligatory for you to sacrifice. God has given ample opportunities for each and everybody to sacrifice on daily life. To sacrifice a seat in a public transport to an old person, ladies and children is too a sacrifice.

Gujarat is a leading beef exporting State in the nation. Can we fathom this mental disorder of the electorate and their holy leaders who are legally pulling away the protean rich food from the dinner table of the Indian citizens? What kind of an insanity is this?

Fundamental error in your comment is that you are equating beef to cow meet. that is not the case. beef contains many other animals that Indians are not so sentimental on. Yes hindus do worship cows and their paddy field as that has been the backbone for us for centuries. Hinduss see gods in parents, gurus, cows and fields. No one in the world has seen god, have they? so if hinduus worship what they see divinity in, then they might get offended if that divinity harmed. While I don't think beef ban is right, the argument on the ban side is logical too.

The educated and peace-loving Hindus associated with dozens of political parties in India must take the initiative, backed up by the minority religious people 100% to rescue India from plunging into the 10th century civilization else we are going to watch very serious problems in India.

Foreigners at this very economically critical time in the world would be pulling away their stocks and other investments from India due to her social and religious disorder.

Bette rUlemas try to ask ban alcohol at least in ramadhaan if possible. We saw in national media debate about meat ban in northern states where all political parties including BJP try to disown the meat ban recently due to revolutionary pressure from the modern indias youngsters.Infact now time has come to legalise all the meat business as per hygiene n standard.
