FIR against rationalist KS Bhagwan for 'hurting' religious sentiments

Bengaluru, Sep 23 (India Today) : A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed in Karnataka against Kannada author and rationalist KS Bhagwan for "hurting" religious sentiments despite the celebrated writer complaining of receiving threats from right-wing groups accused of killing other rationalists.

The complaint against Bhagwan was filed by a person named Shyam in Upinangady near Mangalore. The complainant said Bhagwan's recent speech at Gandhi Bhavan in Bengaluru had hurt Hindu sentiments. A senior police officer said that the FIR was filed and the case transferred to the High Grounds police station in Bengaluru.

Bhagwan had incurred the wrath of right-wing activists after he allegedly disparaged the Bhagavad Gita while speaking at a programme in Mysuru in February this year.

Interestingly, the FIR against Bhagwan came even as the Karnataka Sahitya Academy is planning to honour him with Honorary Awards for Lifetime Achievement for 2013. Earlier on Wednesday, a man working as a hostel warden and priest was arrested at Hubballi in North Karnataka for allegedly making threat calls to the Academy for choosing rationalist the writer for the award.

Following the announcement of the award, which will be presented to Bhagwan and others on November 7 in Dharwad, Sahitya Academy had complained about receiving a threatening call. Academy officials had also said they had received several abusive calls for choosing Bhagwan for the award, following which police had provided security to the literary body.

Recently, a letter threatening Bhagwan was delivered to his residence at Mysuru, which came close on the heels of the murder of another noted Kannada progressive thinker and scholar MM Kalburgi in Dharwad. Earlier, a Bajrang Dal local activist was arrested in Dakshina Kannada district, a day after Kalburgi was gunned down on August 30, for allegedly posting remarks on Twitter threatening Bhagwan for his derogatory remarks on the Bhagavad Gita.

We must thank Bhagwan for uniting Hindus....
Such people indirectly help Hindus to come near and become united to face the challenges against Hinduism.
Many of my friends (including me) were earlier very liberals, but repeated attack on Hinduism from some dirty mentality and intellects from other religion not condemning it make us more united.

    When Pakistan wins, some celebrates.
When abusing scripts are being circulated for conversion, some poses too much justice & kindness keeps mum.

I can say, it is only Hindus ready to condemn if a fellow Hindu does wrong.

No learned person will give a call to destroy works of another learned person. Even if you do not consider Ramayana, Mahabharata or Gita as holy books they are high quality literature works with prose and poetry which Bhagwan can never create. Content you may not agree but what right he has to give call for burning those works created by authors thousands of years ago.
There are many non hindus who enjoy movies, dramas and yakshaganas based on these epics.
Cheap Publicity Pranks by Bhagawan and also those who oppose him...both getting free Press/media attention.

How would this be just infuriating right wing! This has hurt whole hindu community. If this gentleman is ready discuss or have a forum for open debate with learned scholars like Dr. R. Ganesh its fine but no! He entices mere publicity. Also, it has to be clear what exactly his point is? Is he having problem with caste? Is he having problem with holy scriptures? Is he having problem with the deities or with rituals? What is this about? If he has written a book on something then fine. But this person goes on media making absurd statements?! Most importantly, if there are problems what steps has he taken to reform it.

Just to get name and fame don't hurt the sentiments of religion. Religion is the matter of belief at times it fails to logical test.Matter of faith must be left with followers. At the same time it is wrong to take law into hand. Our constitution has given fundamental right of free speech and expression of opinion albeit with reasonable restriction. So the parties which hurt by the speech of KS Bhagavan can seek constitutional remedy. Real Hindu is tolerant and counter rationalist with intellectual discussion and debate

All religions took birth to give some kind of direction for the people of the time. These religions over the period of time changed according to times some for better and others de-generated into ritualism. But all religions carried something of the past religions as they felt the logic of the time. All religions tried to find answers to the unknown to mankind but the answers were the logic of the time which could change in the future. So no religion has fixed values for eternity. So anybody criticising any religion without vulgarising should be the right of the people. No body can say that any perticular definition is the only way to be practice any religion. Only with criticism and questioning can the human kind progress into progressive future.

In Jarkhand , Chattisgad & Odisha States many tribals worship Ravana, Mahishasura & Narakasura as Gods. Then When Vaidiks deride these Tribal Gods as Rakshasa, Demons, Evil forces, then it also hurts the religious sentiments of Tribal people of Jarkhand, Odisha & Chattisgarh. So, why Tribal people should not file FIR against Hindutva brigades for hurting the feelings of tribal people by insulting their Gods ?

If all issues in this country are settled through proper channels of law and justice system, rather than instigating mobs or groups to act violently , only then we will see a new INDIA..LET THE SYSTEM OF LAW DECIDE...NOT RELIGIOUS PROTECTION GROUPS...or any individual taking law in their own hands ...

OK, the right wing Hindu group feels that their sentiments are hurt, then you have the right to complain to the legal local authority but making threat calls and murder is not at all accepted, on the contrary all your effort will back fire on you and you will loose public sympathy.
