Mangaluru: Locals protest against unscientific road construction

Mangaluru, Oct 20: People from Mallikatte and other areas held a unique protest on Tuesday October 20 against the poor condition of roads in the city and the problems faced by people due to lack of planning during road construction. A man dressed in a skeleton costume was the centre of all attention, as he demonstrated the dangers posed by unscientific construction of the road and the median.

In a memorandum addressed to the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, they pointed out the unscientific manner in which the road and median have been constructed along the stretch from Vas Bakery to Mallikatte which was concreted recently. Accidents are common here due to construction of a median without widening the road, they said.

The traffic was smooth here earlier and the median has created problems. The median is cracked with vehicles hitting against it continuously, they complained.

"City buses plying on the route are proceeding through alternative road to prevent hassles causing hardship to commuters," they stated. The protesters demanded that the median be removed so that the road may be convenient to pedestrians, school children and senior citizens.

Meanwhile, Nagarika Hita Vedike in a memorandum addressed to TV and media reporters in Mangaluru stated the inadequacies in the city despite being identified for Smart City.

They said the city was facing a scarcity of suitable markets, service bus stand, parks for recreation, playgrounds for youth and swimming pools despite having upgraded as city corporation from town municipal council about three decades ago.

"The roads were concreted so that they do not wear away during the monsoons. However, there are many tarred roads in the city which have remained in good conditions without being made into a concrete road," they said.

"Why was the road dividers constructed without completion of four lane roads? Who is responsible for the deaths caused as a result of such dividers? Do the officials have the statistics of people who die in the accidents?" they asked in the memorandum.

"The Jeppu seminary road wash concreted four years ago. Why are there no dividers on the road? Why do the widths of the dividers vary from road to road? Why are narrow dividers constructed if the roads are broad and broad dividers if the roads are narrow?

"Has the corporation constructed and maintained roads as per the Indian Road Act? Has alternate transport arrangement been made for the people where the road work is in progress in their area? The concrete roads have caused uneven ground level in building and housing sites and senior citizens and physically challenged people face hardships while reaching the road from their houses. The concrete roads also have caused problems in the flow of polluted water and drainage," the Samiti complained.

"Road safety week is held every year spending lacs of tax payers' money. Is it not an annual drama? Is it not true that the chaos causes complex problems instead of reducing the accidents and traffic blocks?" the memorandum stated.

The memorandum was signed by locals also.

Why are our politicians failing to understand the importance of
    1. Healthcare and Hygine
    2. Highways and Roads
    3. Garbage Free environment
    4. Education

are vital for the good quality of life in this country. I request the ministers to make Mangalore Pothole and Garbage Free asap. We have to stop inviting politicians for public functions , opening gold shops, hotels etc and let them focus on the need of the hour.

There is one curious activity by MCC staff that is directly contributing to Asthma and other respiratory ailments.

Any body from Hospitals, medical colleges( cough cough) to raise awareness ( same way as organ donation)

You can see the burning of leaves even in Govt hospital premises , near bus stands , near Nehru maidan near Central fish market etc.

Lets not wait and blame our politicians for this. Lets stop and take care of this by :
Click picture of the person( MCC employee)burning leaves - WhatsApp it. Let there be accountability( one week suspension of pay) - difficult? or simple not possible?

How smart is our MCC? Can they put a stop to this activity or simply blame it on PWD?

Hats off to the protesters. I wish I too could have joined you had I known. This is not only your local issue- it needs support from all the Mangaloreans.
Enough is enough. Our silence and indifference has caused this sad state of affairs. What is the use of all the inauguration stones with the names of Who is who's? Do we need to glorify these people ( minsters etc?).

    1. The need to have pothole ambulance patrol: A demand from Public.
If we start a photograph contest: the potholes on damar roads and concrete roads there is possibility that some dangerous manhole potholes pictures may win the prize!!

    Job description:
    >>Plugging manholes Potholes:
Why cant we plug the manholes with bitumen mixture ( easily removable when required to open the manholes).

    >>Painting road signs , bumps:
All the bumps/speed breakers need regular paintings - every 10 months. Onji sala paint malthunda yava? (what kind of logic is this?)
When we pay MCC taxes - we demand our roads to be maintained. We do not pay MCC for their staff to work for us.

    Traffic signs:
Making sure that there is no doubt about one way etc. Although I should say the RTO signs themselves need some changes. Putting more signs is not a waste of money. Spend money. If this saves lives then it is money well spent.
Let there be bitumen jalli mixture in a van with necessary other equipment - lets call it Pothole ambulance. Let the employees be regular MCC employees.
    2. Concreted roads have been dug up ( in connection with drainage etc) after that the trenches have not been covered back with cement. What sort of logic is this? Why cant the people who dug up also cement the gaps? ( pending for years) . Where is civic sense?
It is our road too. If we dig up then we need to plug the holes we created. We have ayudha pooje - why cant we have pooje for the roads too?

There should be a PIL filed against MCC against road hazards near schools. How safe are our roads to pedestrians?

Wake up call for the Government. Chief Minister and other Ministers go abroad to evaluate the infrastructure and adopt something which is beneficial for the city. However when they complete the tour they forget the main purpose and no benefit for the tax payers money which was spent on the foreign tours. Instead of playing the political blame game, please do something for the infrastructure which will be remembered for the years to come and will help Mangalore to become true smart City.

Nonsensical PWD. No intercommunication AT all. PWD civil constructs a nice interlocked pavement on Bejai Kapikad road. PWD Electrical cooly comes to install a 220KV line. Removes all interlocks and goes. Pavement is shit now.

I am staying near Balmatta, and usually walk in these stretchs. The road constructed is nice one, except the unfinished portion in front of Dr. Shanker's clinic. I do not know why this portion is pending. The divider is nice, there is no logic in removing the divider and the accident will be reduced. The need of the hour is to put a road barrier in the curve and a Traffic signal in the junction (in front of Kadri dwara) or at least posting of a Traffic police.

Mr A shetty u r from balmatta, and you see the outer beauty of the road..probebly you have not observed the number of accidents occurred due to the unscientific methods used while concreting the roads. the man who took the initiative has studied every problem in our district from decades. HATS OFF. to him

This unique way of protest has to be supported by everyone & person who has taken this initiative people have to be thankful for his courage. We are in 21st century & still government approves the Buildings & Roads without proper basic study & planning. There is no Parking for the vehicles even today in most of the new commercial & other buildings & no walkways for the pedestrians when they build new roads. This is called a smart way of planning to fill the pockets of corrupt official & politicians not for the cause of smart-city.

Great concept to wake up our City administration. Appreciated his novel idea.
In my opinion, even given another 100 years our major infrastructure would not come close to International standard (Smart City), unless our bureaucrats bring major changes within themselves.

Road safety week is yet another media for corruption and to swindle tax payers money.
The roads in Mangalore are concreted without giving any consideration for bylanes. HENRY PINTO LANE in Kadri is an example. most people using that lane are senior citizens including myself. many complaints hve been lodged with the MLA & THE LOCAL COUNCILER. To this day no action has been taken. I hv seen young boys with two wheelers falling & I myself had a fall & fractured foot but who cares only God has to help us. however I have noticed the road leading to a BJP leaders house from Alvares road has been concretised in no time. I wonder frm where the budget came!!!!

He is surely out of his head. How can a median cause accidents. Instead of demanding a footpath he is demanding to remove the median. It will be another call for more deaths and accidents as this a junction which is having a curve. Hence , median is much more safe to avoid head on collision..

Exactly. That is what even I thought. When they are protesting against unscientific way of road construction, their suggestion should be scientific and the removal of median is not at all a scientific step. Instead they could have demanded proper markings of pedestrian crossings with humps.

The compound wall of a house and hospital in the particular stretch has forced the MCC from maintaining
the required width.Only if a narrow median is kept the pedestrians can
    squeeze through.
