Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D’Souza takes lead in installing solar panels

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Oct 21: Deputy commissioner (DC) A B Ibrahim on Wednesday October 21 inaugurated 10 kw solar power grid installed on the rooftop of the residence of MLC Ivan D'Souza in Valencia. With this, the MLC also initiated the first step towards making Mangaluru a Smart City.

Appreciating Ivan D'Souza while stressing the need for renewable energy sources, the DC said, "In the coastal region, there is ample opportunity for using solar energy. About 10 kw of solar energy produces 10 units of power. After personal use of the power produced, individuals can give the remaining units to Mescom grid thereby earning Rs 9.56 per unit.

He also said that the initiative taken by the MLC in installing the solar panel on the rooftop of his residence should be emulated by others.

Ivan D’Souza explained that during his recent visit to Boston and New York, he had found many houses installed with solar panels on the rooftops, and he decided to become self-reliant by using solar power. "In this campaign, presently 31 people have come forward to install solar panels on their rooftops. People must invest in solar panels which will provide power with zero maintenance. The installed panel will provide 5 units per day."

He also said that banks are providing loans for people to install solar panels.

District incharge minister B Ramanath Rai also appreciated the MLC for his initiative and said, "There is power scarcity in the state. The demand for power is more and we have to fulfil it. Thus, solar power becomes essential in the present scenario. The excess power generated from the solar rooftop can be sold to Mescom grid. The government is also providing subsidy for this."

Mayor Jacintha Alfred, MUDA chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, and MCC commissioner Dr H N Gopalkrishna were present on the occasion.

Anything to do with MESCM, pl be careful. What if in future they hike the power consumption tariff & do not increase buying rates from your panels. What if one panel blows off from the cluster, the replacement cost can be 100 times more than what you make a year selling power. Insurance paying every year is going up,will you ever get meaningful benefit. Will you ever recover your Investment?

Minimum 2500-3000 sq ft unhindered rooftop and an additional investment of Rs. 8 Lakhs is required for 10 KW solar power generation. Only politicians with questionable means can afford this in Mangalore City. After introduction of smart city project, Mr. Ivan can enhance the solar capacity to 25 KW with a still glamorous press coverage. From the people .... by the people .... for the people .... to the People. People centered actions and service! Great Indian Democracy.....!

What is there to highlight the solar issue of Ivan. There are so many solar panels installed on the roof tops of houses. I just came across 1 1/2 year back around 15 to 20 panels installed some where near the Bondel Vamanjoor Road near Devi Nagar Pachanady. Daiji should visit these places and take their experience and share with the Daiji Readers in order to bring awareness among the people

This is very common in Germany. Our coastal Karnataka has shiny days for most of the time. Tirupati Temple has set an example by extensive use of non-conventional energy. Recent inaugration of solar farm at Kochi Airport is a welcome sign.
Though we have been hearing that the government encourages public to install solar panels and connect the same to grid, most of the people dont have awareness of the same.
If Daiji publishes an article on the private non conventional energy generation (procedures, documentation, etc.) it will be gift to our future generations.
