Udupi, Oct 26: The Catholic diocese of Karnataka, JIVIT Family Life Commission of Udupi diocese for the first time in the history of 14 years observed Widows' Day at Mount Rosary Church near here on Friday October 23.

The day began with a Eucharistic mass concelebrated by the bishop of Udupi diocese, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo along with Fr Stany B Lobo, dean of Kallianpur deanery and rector of Milagres Cathedral, Fr Fredrick Mascarenhas, dean of Udupi deanery and parish priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi, Fr Chetan Lobo Capuchin editor of Uzvaad, Udupi diocese, Fr Lawrence C D’Souza secretary of CESU, Fr Fredrick D’Souza of Thottam Church and Fr Philip Nery Aranha parish priest of Mount Rosary Church, Kallianpur.

Fr Chetan gave a beautiful and meaningful homily in relation to the life of widows in our society. The choir led by Fr Mahesh D’Souza, assistant parish priest of Mount Rosary added to the devotion of the Eucharistic celebration.

The Eucharistic mass was followed by a reception held at Mount Rosary Millennium Hall. The program was inaugurated by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo who lit the lamp and presided over the function. The program started with a prayer dance by Mount Rosary English school students.

Senior most woman of the day, Lucy D’Souza of Manipal parish, retired Prof Alban Rodrigues, resource person, Msgr Edwin Pinto, Fr Lawrence C D’Souza, Leslie Aroza director of Family Life Commission and others were present.

In his brief message, the bishop pointed out that the Catholic Church pass through the family, there is no partiality in the family in the sense of role of woman in society. In society everyone is equal including widows. The diocese of Udupi needs widows for its development as well as their active role in society. Widows should live as happily as they did before widowhood and widows should be granted opportunities and live in a positive way in society. In order to develop and to live actively in society, widows must form associations.

Leslie Aroza welcomed the gathering and delivered the vote of thanks. Alphonse D’Costa, secretary of diocesan pastoral council compered the programme. Around 650 widows of the diocese were present.

Thanks to the organisers. It's a meaningful event, needs to be done every year. This will give energize the tough life of widows. Grateful to widows who lost their beloved ones and continuing the difficult life without their husbands. I pray for them.

I congratulate the organizers of the event who enhanced the happiness of widows and widowers of the diocese at least for some extent because in the present situation many widows are living lonely because of small families and other reasons. If such activities are conducted every year these people are getting some interest in boring life.

I know from my own experiences what it means to lose beloved ones. This is a tragedy and it takes time to overcome. But life goes on and has to go on. There are millions who made this experience. For widows and widowers life change completely and therefore is it extremely important to have hobbies, interests and especially a meaning of life, friends. All that can help to adapt to a new situation in life and after some time to become stable again. The Church plays an important role to offer help and support widows. “The diocese of Udupi needs widows for its development as well as their active role in society.” That will definitely encourage widows and I would like to say widowers too to play an active role in the parish, taking up duties, meeting friends with whom they attend mass, pray, read the Bible. Going to church regularly will strengthen widows. Yes, widows should form associations in order to lead an active life in society and the diocese can offer help and support.

    Best regards

It would have been appreciative if the bishop had to say a few words about remarriage, instead of widows must form association. Also create a matrimonial website to find suitable partners for widows and widowers. The Udupi diocese could give lead in this matter. It is not good to live as widow or widower. It is a sorry state of life. Therefore everyone in the society and particularly the hierarchy in the Church and grown children in the family must actively support for remarriage of widows and widowers. Prem Rog and Dor are some of the movies that challenge the social stigma about widows and widowers.
