Udupi, Oct 28: Karavali Bypass Nagarika Samiti members on Wednesday October 28 held a protest meeting near Karavali junction here against the proposed underpass and demanding the construction of a flyover on the national highway at this spot.

Convener of the Samiti, Bannanje Babu Amin addressing the protesters said, "Udupi underpass plan is completely unscientific. Malpe-Manipal is a fast developing stretch. The proposed underpass would change the image of Udupi city as it would split Udupi into two parts.

"The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) must install strong concrete pillars instead of sand filled ones as the former would last longer," he added.

Amin also stressed on the need to create awareness among people regarding the issue.

"The NH authority should give a favourable response to our demands or else people will hold a massive protest in the days to come," he warned.

He added that the historic Paryaya celebration is drawing near and people from across the nation will gather in Udupi, so the construction work would be hindered due to heavy traffic. "Karavali junction is the main entrance to the city next to Udyavara Swagata Gopura for people entering the city, hence construction work here would create problems during the Paryaya celebrations," he said.

Sri Laxmivarateerta Swamiji of Shiroor Math said, "Collecting public opinion is important before work on the underpass begins. I fully support this cause."

Shantaraj Aithal, retired NHAI official said that the underpass is an unscientific plan. "The Mangaluru-Byndoor national highway plan was implemented in 1972. The underpass design lacks the opinions of experts. The four-lane project file is still stuck in the central government office," he said.

Prasadraj Kanchan, retired president of Chamber of Commerce and Industry pointed out that nearly 2,500 families lost their lands to road expansion alone and number of vehicles on the road is increasing at the rate of 30 percent a year. In this scenario, a scientific plan was necessary to tackle the increasing traffic, he said.

Janani Diwakar Shetty, district president, Jaya Karnataka, Ramesh Kanchan, CMC councilor, Harish Ram, CMC member, Sudhakar Shetty, owner hotel Sharada international, Udupi, Harish Kini, Congress leader, Shivaji and others were present.

A well planned flyover is required at Karavali junction. There is no doubt that this type of protest with scientific plan will reach logical end. Otherwise protests with vested interests not only destroys but makes damages irreparable.. we have example of destroyed Katapadi Junction.. Planned Highway at Katapadi was to go bellow about seven feet.. so the East-West Spacious flyover and necessary service roads could have been managed with active planned protests... Now unscientific Katapady Junction fully divides East and West when the Highway is operational. After Katapady one has to move minimum of two KMs upto Pangala to cross or U-turn... Similarly at Udyavar, Korangrapady Bypass, Balaipade and Ambalpady this NH creates lot of hurdles if local travelers have not addressed and involved properly...

Constructing of unscientific highway junctions with four way or six way only aiming to collection of tall charges... victims are daily travelers.... wearer Knows where the Shoe pinches...

First of all why should this highway pass though the city?. Can it bear the traffic density 10 years from now?. Don't you think that all the small trucks that run today will be replaced by hugh trailer trucks in the future. Is it acceptable that a highway has 30km and 5okm speed limits (something that will have to be implemented if highway passes through ths city). And many people are talking about development. If we do cut and paste jobs ie. modify existing intercity roads to highways then do you think that is development. When other places like navalgund , sakleshpur, hubli etc. all have bypass roads for their highways , Ironically the people of our twin districts (especially the ones who live far from the highway) support bypass/underpass while simultaneously talking about development.

Looks like karavali (udupi mangluru) people do not want any progress. whenever some new thing is planned, there are people opposing and fighting. Oil zone, SEZ, power plant, Government buses, ola/uber cabs - people protest against all these activities. Some of these protests stop (probably after money is given to protest organizers).

Fly over construction is simple as long as good / well creative engineer appointed with out any corrupt mind..can built in max 8 to 10 months time rather than dragging 3 years to build simple fly over.. let the go to other places like dubai / or some quick far east nation and see how fly over can be built in a simple way of road traffic and highway passing..

some issues peoples participation/suggestions not work and block the development unless they have done through research on the matter. this looks like some hidden agenda. let the pros n cons be studied by qualified persons then decide. these day any one forms a samithis to get some mileage/political patronage.

Project has been ON for over 2 years but was sleeping due to contractor's problems. The issue should have been raised from that time. Now, when the work has started, they are making a hue and cry. what use?

Take example of Kundapura. there was a proposal for the underpass and the people at that time raised the issue. The MP of that time Mr. Jayprakash Hegde used his office cum influence to change to highway. Now the people of Kundapura are happy.
