Hyderabad, Aug 9: Controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen was roughed up by MIM activists on Thursday, who stormed into a book release function here, injuring a Telugu writer and a press photographer.

Nasreen, here to release the Telugu translation of her latest book Shodh, escaped unhurt as organisers and journalists shielded her and escorted her to safety.

A group of over 40 MIM workers, led by party MLAs Afsar Khan, Ahmed Pasha and Mouzam Khan, barged into the press club at Somajiguda when the function was about to end.

Hurling abuse and shouting slogans, the MIM workers surged menacingly towards the dais as a stunned Nasreen looked on.

They threw papers and books at Nasreen. In the melee, Telugu writer N Innaiah, the organiser of the function and president of the rationalist organisation centre for inquiry, was injured along with a press photographer.

Alert organisers and journalists covering the event threw a protective ring around Nasreen and took her to an adjoining room. The MIM activists, who demanded that Nasreen should leave immediately, broke windows and damaged furniture at the venue.

Police then reached the spot and dispersed them. The three MLAs from the city and their supporters were taken to Banjara hills police station, deputy commissioner of police M Madhusudhan Reddy said.

The manager of the press club filed a complaint with police against the attackers.

A large number of media persons gathered at the press club and protested against the behaviour of the MIM activists. They sought stringent action against the MLAs and their supporters.

Later, a delegation of journalists led by Indian journalists Union (IJU) secretary general K Srinivasa Reddy and Andhra Pradesh Union of working journalists (APUWJ) leader D Amar met Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and sought stringent action against the culprits.

The MIM, which has considerable influence in the old city area, is represented in the Lok Sabha by Asaduddin Owaisi and has five members in the assembly.

Digvijay Singh, the Congress general secretary in-charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, condemned the incident and said such attacks had no place in a liberal society.

The CPI state council termed the incident as an “attack on the freedom of expression by Muslim fundamentalists” and demanded the immediate arrest of the MIM legislators and their supporters.

What could be the reaction of some of our friends who are too eager to criticise the Hindu organisations like Bhajrang Dal, VHP and would link any happening to Gujarath etc.How much vociferous would be our Leftist parties about this issue and how much our "Secular forces" and pseudo intellectuals react to this. Did our PM lose his sleep over this issue where a woman was publicly attacked is another point to ponder. Will it be what is sauce to goose is so to gander, or something else.

The Bangladeshi author, Taslima Nasreen, may be controversial. However, under the freedom of expression, she has every right to express herself, whether some like her works and others do not like it. If anyone is not happy with her works, they can express it through proper platform and not through strong arm tactics and violence. Writing is her livelihood and she has every right to pursue it.

All the three MLAs who led the people to disrupt the release of her Telugu version of the book "Shodh" and attack on her should be immediately arrested, prosecuted till the case concludes through judgement. Fanatics and funadamentalists are destroying the national fabric of the country and it is for the secular people to get together and marginalise these anti-social and anti-national elements. Democracy does not give the right to indulge in destructive activities, but contribute in nation building and fostering in communal harmony and this should be the prime responsibility and duty of all politicians, whether they are MPs and MLAs.

If they cannot do this, then they should have no place in politics and find some other vocations. This incident will lead to a spurt in the sale of this author's books, which will rise appreciably.

Tasleema is an icon for modern women. She is courageous enough sustain such brutalities. This is an act of people who do not respect freedom of speech or write. I can say they are in no way better than Bhajarang Dal. This kind of mentality is always harmful for the society.

I could see more write-ups by Daiji readers against such an act by Bhajarang Dal. And I hope readers of Daijiworld will give similar response of condemnation about this matter too. This act has shown how women are treated, when they open their mouth against atrocities by so called superior gender in the name of Islam.
