Udupi, Feb 2: Tension prevailed on the national highway at Kaup here on Tuesday February 2 evening after one person was killed and another injured in an accident.

The deceased has been identified as Preetam Shetty (23), son of the late Yadava Shetty and Shashikala Shetty of Kotalakatte, Kaup.

The accident took place when a recklessly driven bus hit a stationary fish truck. The truck had broken down, and when the bus driver tried to overtake it in a rash manner, a rod at the rear end of the truck broke and hit Preetam who was in the bus, killing him on the spot.

The Nandi Motors express bus was moving from Mangaluru to Kundapur.

Meghana Brahmavar, who was injured in the accident, has been admitted to hospital. She is a student of St Aloysius College, Mangaluru.

The locals who were angered by the incident gathered in large numbers and protested against the rash and reckless driving of bus drivers. Buses plying between Udupi and Mangaluru were forcibly stopped by the protestors.

There were heated exchange of words between the protestors, the police and passengers of various buses. Finally, after much effort, the police managed to calm down the situation. The locals blamed both recklessness on the part of the bus driver and the truck standing on the road for the accident.

Preetam had lost his father due to sudden illness a few years ago. He was the only son among three siblings, and after his father's death, Preetam took up the responsibility of looking after his mother and two sisters. He was working at a pharmacy in Mangaluru, and at the time of the accident, was on his way to the pharmacy's Udupi office after finishing his work in Mangaluru. The family was already under financial burden after Preetam's death, and now the situation has worsened with another irreparable loss.

Kaup circle inspector G M Nayak, Kaup SI Jagadish Reddy, Padubidri SI Azmat Ali arrived at the spot and took stock of the situation.

Kaup police have regsistered a case.

On the mangaluru udupi route, does any passenger have guts to ask the driver to slow down and drive safely? At the cost of embarrassing ourselves front of other passengers, and getting the scorn of the bus driver, we are all mute spectators on the bus driven by rash bus driver..

If we believe the messages circulated in WhatsApp, Late Preetam Shetty wrote in his Facebook or WhatsApp message that “This is my last words”. May be he wrote by mistake or he wanted to say something else without knowing the actual meaning of that!!!! But fate is not fake!!!! Let us pray together for his bereaved family that “May God bless his soul eternal peace and give strength to his family members to bear the great loss”

Seriously :( these buses are driven extremely recklessly. Private bus lobby doesn't allow govt to introduce Govt buses. Even in Mangalore city, I read that 17 or 18 JNURM buses are awaiting permission for plying from statebank and as usual it is delayed and run in to risk of getting taken back by govt due to delay in approval by authority (you know why)

Very sad, heartfelt sympathies for the family of Preetam's who sacrificed his life. These drivers will never learn since they are a uneducated lot of people. Not only at the road they are rash with their driving even while stopping at a bus stand they are rash, they never stop at a designated bus stand best example is at Milagres bus stand. The Government should stop these Pvt. buses from plying this route and guys then see the difference. How do you expect smart Mangalore to get a smart city tag when you have such bus drivers. They should know that they are only Managlore - Udupi express not Air India Express.

It is shocking that this news has created hatred against express bus drivers. Agreeing to the fact that many of them drive quite rash but this wasn't the case in this accident.
The fish truck in this case was allegedly the culprit. Getting first hand exposure to this accident, it was quite evident that the fish truck had been wrongly parked on the highway. In fact, none of its tires were out of the highway! Incidentally there happens to be a truck parking bay just adjacent to the accident spot. One cannot envisage why the truck driver parked his vehicle in the wrong place.
All I can say about this bus is that it managed to end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. One should note that, if it weren't the bus, it could have been even a car or a bike. This was the reason all other bus drivers staged a protest to apprise the public of the dangers of parking on the highway rather than blaming commuters/drivers in the likelihood of an accident.
It is just like keeping your hand in the lion's cage and after your hand has been eaten, you tag the lion as a bad lion.
Comments like breaking the driver's legs, etc., are undoubtedly creating an immoral reputation to the society. People should be considerate while giving their opinions.

Accidents could have prevented if the bus driver was careful, not driven on high speed can still contro his bus. wrong parking & driving on wrong side is not something new here. Expect the unexpected things...keep the vehicle under control

while people are to be considerate, dont you think express bus drivers have responsibility to drive buses safely? Will you give same comment if some known person/close to family or a close friend was injured in the accident?

Now a days every one has mobile phone. Police department can ask people to take pic of illegal parkings and fine the lorry on spot or broken down lorrys can be shifted if govt deploys a crane every 20 kms.

At abroad if a life is lost, they strive to make sure that such incidents dont happen again. But here life has no value, unfortunately.

    Dear NM
It seems to me that you are condoning the bus driver for this accident.

If indeed the bus driver was driving as per your comment why did he end up hitting a parked truck which to me is like an elephant sitting in the middle of the road and which should not have escaped the vision of this bus driver unless his eyes were shut still.

Please realize that the carelessness and rashness of this murderous bus driver has now deprived a helpless family of their only bread winner.

Unfortunately it is a known fact in India that the bus and truck drivers own the roads as they pay hafta to the RTO.

I am not disheartened by the comments I have received. In fact, express bus drivers have earned this incredible reputation during past accidents. Just to clear some of your doubts, all vehicles are equipped with warning lights in case of a breakdown. People even use a primitive method of placing tree branches as a warning that a vehicle has broken down. In this case while the bus driver just changed the lane while overtaking another truck, he was met with a surprise of a stationary truck. Owing to its speed and proximity it was unable to control.
Again I reiterate, unlike other accidents this one was not the fault of the bus driver and I would not change my statement even if me or any of my family member was affected by this accident.
I do NOT say that express bus drivers don't drive rash, nor do I oppose speed governor installation. It is just that this accident was an exceptional case of not having to do with the fault of the driver.
Bottom Line: Look at the images and ascertain the speed of the bus at impact.

The only solution for this is that either install speed governors on all express buses or whenever a bus is booked for any offence, it should be impounded and released only after the speed governor is installed!. But I am sure RTO will not do anything since they are heavily greased by these bus operators. Only Supreme Court can order such a thing.

The cause and effects of accidents are:
    1. no driving manners
    2. no lane discipline
    3. reckless speed driving as they are driving in the open space.

RTO must tighten the driving test and issue the DL untill they follow and adhere to the driving/traffic rules very strictly.

The only way to control reckless driving of this express bus drivers is to break their legs when ever they met with accident and create fear among them, this will be our fate in case they met with an accident by reckless driving.
