16 arrested after cop was beaten, forced to hoist saffron flag in Latur

Latur, Feb 24 (PTI) : Sixteen people have been arrested so far on charges of assaulting two policemen who last week stopped locals from hoisting a “saffron flag” in a communally sensitive area in Latur district, police said today.

A mob had allegedly beaten up Assistant Sub-Inspector Yunus Shaikh (57) and manhandled his colleague K Awaskar when they prevented them from putting up the flag at a controversial spot in Pangaon village.

Shaikh was hospitalised following the assault.

The 12000-strong population of Pangaon village consists of Marathas, Dalits, Reddys and Muslims among others.

On the night of February 19, Shaikh and Awaskar allegedly stopped a group of local youths from erecting the flag in the “sensitive” area. The group included Marathas and other Hindus celebrating Shivaji Jayanti, police said.

Awaskar and Shaikh, both on duty at Pangaon police chowki, reached the spot and asked the youth to leave. They told them that hoisting the flag could lead to communal clashes, a police official said.

At 9 AM on Saturday, a mob of around 200-300 people from the village, including the youths, showed up at the police chowki.

“They (youths) had incited the mob by telling them that the two policemen had crushed their flags under their feet,” the official said.

The mob then allegedly began to attack the duo with fists and lathis. The ASI and his colleague suffered head injuries, but Shaikh was hit worse and was hospitalised.

A video of the purported attack, which has gone viral, shows Shaikh being made to parade a street with the saffron flag by the mob.

    Sachidanand,

Clever of you to have imagined the similarities in JNU and this episode. In JNU, slogans that were not shouted were made to have shouted by Kanaiya Kumar (you hang those who actually did - I'll be glad). Here in this episode, the police did not disrespect the flag but were announced to the villagers by the culprits that the police did it.

In both cases, instigation is carried out ? What is the achievement anyway ??

1)Hoisting saffron flag is part of patriotism...That cop made a big mistake..coz he misunderstood definition of patriotism...So it amounts to sedition for disrespecting saffron flag being a govt employee and top of that a Muslim..
2)Demand hanging of afzal and yakub are part of patriotism but it doesn't apply to RG killers and Beant Singh..coz the attackers are not Muslims...
3)Shouting in favour of Afzal and Yakub is seditious and anti national...but those who are shouting in favour of Rajaona,Beant Singh killers in Punjab and RG killers in T.N are neither seditious nor anti national.. Even the assembly of respective state govt backed the killers...what if some state assembly backed Yakub...

Oh even police man also categorized as Muslim, Hindu etc.? They serve for the nation, not for any specific community or group.

    Ravi,

Are you 'pro' or 'anti' policemen ? What wrong did the police do by stopping them from hoisting flag ? In your words, if the policemen were majority members, they would have allowed flag hoisting or they wouldn't have allowed the flag hoisting, got beaten and the news wouldn't have come in print ? ??

Now, how do we define the 'Dhroh' committed by these youth ?

First of all, they tried hoist a flag in a sensitive area.

Secondly, they created allegation that the policemen had crushed the religious flag. This allegation angered the locals which in turn caused assault on the police personnel. Who is at fault now ? The villagers or the youth ?

Aren't these youth taking freedom of faith for granted and misusing it ? Please define, what kind of 'Dhroh' is this ?

But Harish, my question is why to give food for such things to Kejri and RG? We Hindus survived all the invasions only because of tolerance. We cannot support such mob mentality. What is the difference between those who are known for mob mentality and these people? We can have rallies, protests but should not involve in provoking. This is condemn-able.
