Dong Bin wins men's triple jump at World Indoor athletics


Portland (Oregon), March 20 (IANS): China's Dong Bin won the men's triple jump gold at the athletics World Indoor Championships and became the third Chinese athlete ever to win a world indoor title.

Dong, world leader in the season with 17.41 metres, took an early lead with 17.18m and then extended his lead with a 17.29m effort in the third attempt, before he leaped 17.33m in the penultimate round to grab the title here on Saturday, reports Xinhua.

Germany's Mex Hess took silver with a personal best of 17.14m, while France's European champion Benjamin Compaore trailed at the third spot with 17.04m.

Dong joins sprint hurdler Liu Xiang (2008) and shot putter Sui Xinmei (1991) as the only Chinese athletes to reach the top of the podium in the history of the championships.
