Mangaluru, Apr 13: "In order to avoid untoward incidents, HPCL should strictly follow the terms and conditions in its agreement when bullet tankers carry liquified petroleum gas (LPG) and take strict action if there is any violation," said superintendent of police (SP), Dakshina Kannada, Dr S D Sharanappa.

He was speaking in a meeting organized with various oil companies at his office here on Wednesday April 13.

"In the event of an accident, the time taken by the quick response vehicles (QRV) to reach the spot should be reduced by at least 50%. The number of QRV units and personnel should be increased to tackle any situation. HPCL should ensure that the victims of any accident get proper treatment and compensation. Visit the families of victims and ensure that they have received proper compensation in gas tragedies," SP directed HPCL.

Speaking on the occasion, Jnanashekar, senior manager of HPCL said, "Around 250 gas tankers ply from the plant to various places. As many as 100 gas tankers travel through Shiradi Ghat. Quick response vehicles rush to the spot whenever an accident takes place. A QRV has been stationed at Gundya."

Thiruvasagam, manger of safety, HPCL import terminal said, "Once in six months, workshops are held to train tanker drivers. Drivers are recruited as per the contract agreement. Each tanker has a driver and a cleaner."

He also said that cleaners have been given biometric cards and identity cards from the company.

Replying to this, a police inspector said, "Whenever there have been tanker accidents, no cleaners were found but only drivers. The QRV has no technical engineers."

Officers of HPCL also said that during 2015-16 nearly 30 accidents have taken place in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada.

A fire service officer who was also present at the meeting said that the fire service department has written a letter to the administration to set up a fire service station at Gundya and Karnad.

ADC Kumar, assistant RTO Hegde and deputy director of factories K G Nanjappa were present on the occasion.

Temporary Conductors/cleaners hired by the tanker owners only for the purpose of entry into filling area of HPCL. HPCL doesn't allow the trucks without cleaner inside its filling area. Once the tanker comes out after filling the same cleaner again will go with another tanker for filling. Many times local drivers take the trucks inside for filling as these tanker drivers not having proper driving licence.Daily we can see a large number of cleaners and drivers waiting for trucks/tankers near cargo gate. Once the tanker comes out from HPCL gate only single driver takes the tanker to its destination. This drama happens daily in cargo gate area and HPCL authorities also may aware of it.

Rightly said. This is the case with all other Oil companies too. All it takes is a few hundred rupees of greasing the palms of the officials, be it company staff or our tinted film removing guys on the road.

Blatant lies! Nobody has ever seen a cleaner or extra driver in an LPG Tanker. Whom are you fooling HPCL and all other Oil companies?? Please do not make petty profit at our life's expense. Have some shame.

Totally agree with this observation. Having worked in an Oil company I can vouch for its accuracy that only ONE driver is present in the LPG Tanker. Many a times they have to drive for long duration without any substitute.
