Bantwal, Apr 19: A loaded gas tanker tumbled by its side at Soorikumeru near Kalladka in the taluk on national highway 75 at around 1 am on Tuesday April 19. Gas started leaking from the tanker, after which over 50 houses in the vicinity were evacuated, and traffic on highway was blocked.

It is said that the tanker was carrying LPG after getting it filled at MRPL Mangaluru. The tanker, which was moving to Bengaluru, lost its balance when negotiating a road bend at Soorikumeru ostensibly because the tanker was moving at high speed.

The families living up to some distance from the distance woke up fearing the worst, as the tanker made a big sound as it banged into the road when it lost balance fell. Gas began to leak slowly thereafter, and covered the entire area soon. The locals immediately called the police station and fire brigade. Officials of both these departments reached the spot within sometime thereafter and took remedial measures.

The firemen sprayed water continuously on the nozzle of the gas tanker trolley, which had got separated from the front engine, to prevent the leakage from growing into major disaster. Over 70 firemen from seven fire brigades stationed in the town, Kadri and Pandeshwar, Mangaluru, Beltangady, Puttur etc worked the entire night. The gas continued to leak till 8 am. While many families went away on their own to escape from impending danger, the others were asked by policemen to shift to safer places.

Policemen from the town and rural stations and also from Vittal rushed to the spot and worked in tandem to provide relief. Traffic was blocked on the highway, and vehicles moving towards Puttur from Mangaluru were stopped at Kalladka and sent on Veerakmbha-Anantady-Kodaje route. Vehicles moving towards Mangaluru were stopped at Kabaka and diverted through Vittal. Vehicles coming from the direction of Uppinangady were stopped at Mani and sent on Anantady-Veerakmbha route.

Traffic police from here and Puttur have been working hard to provide a semblance of order to traffic chaos resulting from this accident. Senior fire officer, Shashidhar, divisional officer, Tippeswamy, and district fire brigade officer, G Shekhar, guided relief operations. Rural station house officer here, Rakshit, town station house officer, Nandakumar, and Vittal station house officer, Prakash Devadiga, have camped at the spot.

The concerned authorities will never learn. If the speed limit and the travelling time for these bullet tankers are implemented strictly then such incidents will not occur. We are a fast growing nation with all rules being bent to enable a few people to make money. As many readers imply, why is it so hard to get a pipeline to supply gas. Red tape destroys time and lives here in our country

They must have gas pipeline between mrpl and Bangalore. It should be considered immediately. So much risk involved in transporting through road or railways. Please save people from danger. Always invest in these kind of infrastructure projects.

Fire tenders from 7 stations rushing to handle 1 LPG Tanker accident! Imagine the scenario if there's another mishap requiring the fire tenders at their respective jurisdiction. And what is worse is the alarming frequency with which such incidents are occurring. It's shocking to see so many people idiotically chatting near a potential Bomb! We see better traffic management when some unknown MLA or Minister moves around (who doesn't even have any threat in the first place!) Also, we as tax paying citizens need to know what preventive action have the LPG companies taken? Did this tanker have extra driver or cleaner? Is the Tanker overloaded? Shouldn't the LPG companies have their own fire tenders? Why waste our resources when you earn enough profit?

May be LPG tanker drivers are impressed/influenced by the news of bullet trains. For them nothing is as effective as their usual quota once they are at the wheel. Higher the spirit greater the speed.

LPG tankers seem to have become like time bombs all depends on the driver, how he controls speed or maneuvering the vehicle.
So many similar accidents and they will not learn from previous mistakes.
Thank God, there was no explosion and major disaster. such careless drivers should be punished with 6 month jail term so that others will learn a lesson.

everything is fine. but it's a time for all the promises which authorities , ministers, MRPL officers have given while previous gas accident happened at Penre. Whether all the promises are executed ? forget all, at least one of them is executed . absolutely NO. fortunately, the almighty herself saved these people . If it was a sudden blow in this accident, today we would have been counting the dead bodies... with same officers, politicians, authorities announcing same condolences and promises. Bloddy , shame on these people who wake up only when such accident occurs. Why the hell again a tanker was left to run so fast on this road ? Where the hell is the safety measures promised by MRPL on these tankers to ensure no leakage while such accidents. where are the safety measures to be taken by the lorry drivers. Now also we , at surathkal see most of the tankers driven by sole driver , with out any helpers. Shame on everybody who involved in the accident and behind the reason directly or indirectly.

A Good move by the Fire Brigade, It seems like they are refilling the Gas inside the fallen tank to another Tank, you can see another empty gas tanker parked nearby. That's the right thing to do when Gas-tanker overturns.

When Tank falls and if some crack happens, Gas starts leaking and Pressure keeps on increasing inside the tank upto a certain psi level and it will be a very big threat to society. To Overcome this, The gas inside the tank must be moved to another tanker through hose pipe. Once, Refilling is done, They are safe.

    Certainly !

Especially, in these areas wood-fire kilns are used for cooking, not gas stoves. If any house had a burning kiln, an inferno was a sure possibility. Being it past mid-night and all kilns cooled, saved the tragedy !

Very good proactive measures, evacuation of residents, diversion of traffic, But No one thought or assessed about the other two flammable tankers stopped and parked just next to the fallen tanker, Competent fire fighting personnel should take note of this Major Hazard next to the EXISTING HAZARD !!!

Alertness and pro-activeness of the local people averted major disaster.Drivers should be trained to drive in such sharp curves and bends and not to drive fast on such routes, that too while they are half sleeping in the night.Sad incident but thanks god no major human causalities except the loss of gas.

Thank God no causalities. Its time to begin to work reducing the sharp curves and bends. Its unimaginable that the Government can sit idle when we have hundreds of sharp curves along BC Road to Dharmasthala and BC Road up to Madikeri. No where in the world we can witness such numerous and sharp curves on State Highways!

Commendable job from the administration, police and fire services. Handling a situation that happened at 1 O'clock at night is not an easy task. Local residents to be waking up at this time and fleeing for fear of life is a nightmare by itself.

Its quite fortunate that the gas escaped did not catch fire. If that had happened, there would have been casualty in numbers beyond imagination, and bodies charred beyond ability to identify them.

Let the tanker drivers adhere to safety more responsibly !
