Priya meets Uddhav, Congress not chuffed

Mumbai, May 16 (Mumbai Mirror): A fortnight after actor Sanjay Dutt irked several Congress leaders for attending a BJP event on the occasion of Maharashtra Day, his sister and senior Congress leader Priya Dutt on Sunday met with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray at his residence 'Matoshree'.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of Saturday night's events wherein a group of workers, allegedly from the Shiv Sena, pelted stones at a public gathering organised by the Congress Mumbai unit chief Sanjay Nirupam in Kandivali. Nirupam had organised the event to highlight corruption in the Shiv Sena-dominated BMC as part of the Congress' "pol khol" campaign ahead of next year's BMC elections.

Sources in the Congress said that the party was "not happy" with Priya Dutt, a former Member of Parliament, meeting with Uddhav Thackeray, especially when the party had launched a campaign against the Sena and the BJP to "highlight their misrule in the BMC". "Such a meeting could take the sting out of the party's campaign, especially because Priya Dutt is a senior Congress leader and her late father's loyalty to the party is legendary," a senior Congress leader said.

Nirupam himself appeared to defend Dutt, saying he was informed it was a personal meeting. "She has every right to meet anyone in personal capacity," he said.

Dutt told PTI that she did not discuss politics with Uddhav during a meeting that lasted more than 30 minutes. "There was nothing political in our meeting. I met him owing to personal relation," she said.

Last week, BJP's Kirit Somaiya had said that "there was widespread corruption in the BMC and it was in the grip of a powerful mafia controlled by a saheb from Bandra, his brother-inlaw and his PA".

Latching on to the remark, the Mumbai Congress had filed a police complaint demanding registration of an FIR against unnamed persons, including the "saheb from Bandra".
