Kundapur, Aug 20: A 40-year-old fisherman from Maravanthe, Nagaraj Kharvi, died after accidentally falling into the sea when strong winds caused his fishing boat to sway early Wednesday August 19.

The incident occurred at around 5 am, about 200 metres from the Maravanthe outer harbour.

Nagaraj had left home at around 4.30 am on Wednesday to go fishing and reached the Maravanthe harbour. At around 5 am, while the boat was about 200 metres from the harbour in the Arabian Sea, strong winds suddenly blew, causing the boat to sway. Nagaraj lost his balance and fell into the sea.

The others on the boat immediately pulled him out and provided first aid before taking him to the government hospital in Kundapur. However, doctors who examined him declared that he had already died.

The deceased is survived by his wife, a seven-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter.

Based on a complaint filed by his brother Srinivas Kharvi, a case has been registered at Gangolli police station.

Despite boats and fishing vessels setting out from Gangolli, Maravanthe, Koderi and Shiroor on Wednesday morning, strong winds forced all of them to cut short their fishing activity and return to shore.
