Press Trust of India

Dubai, Nov 10: Dubai Police have detained three employees of a company involved in construction of a bridge that collapsed here, killing seven Indians.

The detained persons have been identified as 39-year-old engineer Ch.S., 47-year-old crane driver R F, and 37-year-old crane pusher P. K, all working for Wade Adams Contracting Company, in Dubai Marina where the accident occurred on Thursday.

The case is likely to be referred to Public Prosecution on Sunday. The three could face charges of manslaughter and negligence causing injuries to people, Khaleej Times said in a report.

The families of the seven workers who died in an accident at a construction site will get 10 years' salary in compensation, a company representative said yesterday.

"All our workers have additional insurance. As per our company policy the families of dead workers will get 120 months salary in compensation. The medical expenses of those injured will also be taken care off by us," the official said.

"Of the 19 injured about 15 workers suffered minor injurious while the remaining four workers suffered fractures. They will be given sick leave," he said.

T. Rajanna, a 32 year-old Indian steel fitter who suffered a fracture to his right leg, said the accident occurred as the crane carrying heavy iron rods hit a portion of the bridge under construction.

Sitting in his room along with five roommates at his accommodation in Jebel Ali, Rajanna said he did not relay the news of the accident to his family. "I don't want them to worry about me and spoil their Diwali celebrations," said Rajanna who came a week ago after a three-month vacation with his family in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh.

Compensation offered is rediculous...people who died shd get better deal not just just 10 year salary at 700 odd dhirams. They are no more, so their family should get the retirement salary of the person who died. and people who are injured should get full salady drawn last month till they recover not just sick leave.....dont exploit indian labour....thanks

Higher responsibility lies with the management of the company for not having in place proper HSE [Health, Safety & Environment] policies implemented with qualified HSE dep't in line with OSHA guidelines to prevent recurring of such incidents instead of making poorly groomed & paid Engineer, Crane driver & Crane pusher as SCAPEGOATS. 10 years salary is too little a compensation for the families for the lives lost It should be atleast like blood money paid motor vehicle accident victims.

The companies in UAE in general have very low HSE standards just like in India/Pakistan and this is the main cause for these accidents. The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is an agency of the United States Department of Labor. If the industries worldwide follow these guidelines & have HSE Managers & staff trained & qualified by OSHA certified courses worldwide, then it may definitely reduce this type of avoidabble industrial accidents. I had written the same to the management of Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd, [MRPL] Mangalore whenan accident happened during last monsoon there with lives of 2 offices lost by the collapse of walkway bridge between 2 cooling towers, making their children loose their father, just because there was no vision by the management to spend money for HSE, whereas they prefer to pay petty compensation whenever there is a loss of life.
