Mangalore, Nov 13:  Al Haml, the off-shore supply vessel from UAE has arrived at New Mangalore Port and the oil from the sunken ship M V Den Den will be removed soon, said New Mangalore Port Deputy Conservator Capt Karan V Vaswani.

Speaking to media persons here on Monday, he said the preliminary survey of the sunken ship has been completed and the salvage experts have identified about 15 locations in the sunken ship from which the oil may be removed through a process called Hot Tap method.

This is a method in which a valve is connected to the hull of the vessel (Den Den) in the location of the fuel oil tank by puncturing it to extract liquid by means of pipes from the board of the ship.

Capt Vasvani also said that three tankers will be fixed to the off-shore vessel and the divers will identify the best position so that the vessel can be anchored near M V Den Den, to transfer oil from the sunken ship.

The 13-member salvage operations team from Svitzer Wijsmuller Salvage Company led by Mr Amith arrived at Thannirbavi on November 5 and the experts have come from Netherlands and South Africa besides India.

It may be recalled that three sailors lost their lives while 21 sailors were rescued when the Eritrian vessel sank near Thannirbavi in Mangalore on June 23.

The ship reportedly contains 8,000 metric tonnes of furnace slag.
