Mangalore: Lokayukta Calls for Awareness to Curb Corruption

Mangalore, Nov 13: Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde inaugurated the “Vigilance Awareness Week” on Monday November 12, which is being observed at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) auditorium at Panambur here.

Referring to the state of affairs in the state he remarked “Corruption is a social problem and without social participation, corruption cannot be eradicated.” Therefore he advised that awareness on the need to curb corruption must be instilled among public servants and general public in particular. Hegde in fact called for social and institutional awareness on the issue.

NMPT chairman P Tamilvanan presiding over the function said the port was taking steps to ensure transparency at each level of functioning and the initiatives undertaken to check corruption in the NMPT. In this direction, NMPT has become the first Port to use Biometric system at call point.

Close Circuit Television (CCTV) monitoring activities at every nook and corner of the Port from administrative building, had been commissioned recently, he informed. Chief vigilance officer B Ahamed Ayub after welcoming the gathering spoke about the importance of “Vigilance Awareness Week”. He informed that the NMPT would be organizing essay, quiz programmes, elocution contests to sensitize officers on fighting corruption.

Tamilvanan administered the oath to officers and employees of the port, while NMPT secretary Harichandran proposed the vote of thanks.
