Kundapur, Jul 21: The Kundapur town police and sub-divisional police on Thursday July 21 cracked the whip on buses using vacuum horns as part of the measures planned to be taken during the implementation of a month-long 'Operation Suraksha' that began on July 17.

The operation here started at 7 am on Thursday under the leadership of police sub-inspector Nasir Hussain and Lokesh. They stopped buses that are notoriously known to contribute to the noise pollution with loud honking vacuum horns. They took out the horns from more than 50 buses and imposed fines, besides warning them. The operation went on for more than two and half hours.

In Gangolli, police took the same action against the vehicles under the leadership of sub-inspector Subbanna.

People had complained to the police earlier regarding the unpleasant and irritating sound emitted by the buses and the inconvenience caused to the general public and other types of vehicles. The same types of operations were conducted against the vacuum horns in Mangaluru and Udupi in the past. People in Kundapur and surrounding areas here have appreciated teh police action regarding the issue today.

My humble request to DCP Mr Patil and Commissioner of Police to get tough on Buses,Tippers and Mini Lorries.
    1. New trend has started in Mangalore regarding the Buses. When one Bus Driver sees another bus in distance,His Blood Pressure goes up. He gets the temptation to chase the front bus and overtake it. In this process, one of these days Bus driver with Mobile Phone in one hand and steering wheel in other hand will hit the divider. The Bus will flip over and kill many on Mangalore street. Before this happens,my request to every Citizen to inform the Traffic Dept.Police and stop this Rowdiness. It will be too late to wish Rest In Peace. Let all have Rest and Peace now.
2.Lorries are carrying dug up dirt without covering the dirt. When it rains, wet dirty muddy water leaks through and flashes over Bikers and public walking on road sides. Also they spill wet dirt from wheels on road surface, thus slippery surface knocks bikers of road. One case is stopped in Kalpane Kulshekar with help of Inspector Mr Suresh Kumar and DCP Mr Patil. Thanks to both of You.
3 In the busy hours Buses are over loaded with Passengers hanging on foot boards. What will happen if this Bus passes another vehicle and brushes the passing vehicle. Who is guilty of this crime.
    4. Every morning I see Mini Lorries and Pickup trucks carrying Migrant workers along with little children. Some of these trucks are over loaded with people and few hang out in risk. Some of them carry Concrete mixers along with People.
I have requested few times with past Commissioner but request went with wind. Suppose one Person falls off and following vehicle hits that fallen Person, what will be the fate of following driver.
Thanks to You Mr Suresh Kumar, you are a strict Inspector. We all appreciate Your Help in safeguarding our life.

It is a very good move but just a one time exercise won't help. Such raids should happen every week and offenders should be slapped with hefty fines until they stop using these horns.

You are right Adrian. This should be done regularly. Furthermore the police should be doing this job honestly and follow up ensure these irritating horns do not return to the same buses in a few days time.

Good job done by cops but make sure that the horns will not be returned to them and put a speed control device in the heavy vehicles. If they failed to do so fine them or take out the license so that it can be controlled.

Yes agree with you, People mostly recognize the bus from the nice of the horn. I did that also. But that is ok in the villages where only few scheduled buses play. In the city like mangalore , Udupi or towns mulky , karkala etc will be chaotic if every one starts blowing these high volume trumpets!

This is only to show and then the Police can show in the records that he has done some work. If Praveen, Kulshekar is right if the drivers and cleaners collect the horns later what is the use of nabbing it in the first place. The practice of nabbing the horns should be done on a daily basis through out the year. Not only when the officers feel like doing it.
