Mangaluru: Crafts expo at Roshni Nilaya brings forth splendour of Indian culture

Mangaluru, Jul 22: 'Crafts of India', an exhibition-cum-sale of handifcrafts organized at School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya, was inaugurated on Friday July 22.

Lions district governor for the year 2015-16, M Kavitha Shastri inaugurated the expo by unfurling the Pingara (areca flower).

Addressing the gathering, she said, "Many of us do not know the depth of Indian culture. In our day to day life we do many things which we feel are part of tradition but are ignorant of their exact meaning.

"Why India ticks across the world is because of the Indians who have realized the value of Indian culture and hence are more connected to their roots. Being in India we have not realized this and hence we are forgetting our culture. I call upon everyone to be a proud Indian. I also urge everyone to work towards conserving Indian folklore and cultural richness of the country," she said.

Lauding the work of Roshini Nilaya in this regard she said, "The college has been making a difference in the lives of young people and many others by organizing various events of this kind. It is a golden opportunity for the students of Roshini Nilaya to develop their skills."

Rendering the keynote address, associate convener of the exhibition Joan O'Brian said, "Handicraft exhibitions not only promote the art of their creators but also testify to the taste of good art. Today the main challenge the artisans face is that they are not able to earn a good livelihood through art due to various reasons. The work of Gudi, the institute which has given a platform to 25 artisans is appreciable."

The guests also released the bulletin of sociology economic forum, 'Mirrors Within' at the occasion.

Sr Archana introduced the guests to the gathering while prof Cecelia Goveas rendered the vote of thanks. Aisha Wafa compered the programme.

The exhibition is jointly organized by Sociology economic forum in association with Inchara foundation and Gudi, the social and cultural organization from Shikaripura, Shivamogga. The special attraction of the exhibition features a live demo from artisans of Terracota jewellery, Dokra crafts, handloom, traditional food, exhibition of crafts from various states, live folk performance etc.

Principal of the college Dr Sr Sophia Fernandes, Dr Malini Mukund, co-founder of Gudi Tajuma, director of Inchara Foundation, Preetham Rodrigues and others were present.

    Indian Handicrafts are a major attraction all over the world, particularly in America because the handicrafts display the creativity of people that produce them and make them available for Export market at attractive prices.

    Handicraft industry provide opportunity for jobs, as the handicrafts are also part of the Cottage industry in India.

    India has the brass, India has the wood India has the mosaic and India has the copper and many other precious metals to produce the best of crafts. India also has the cotton, silk and even jute. Most importantly, India also has the talented workmanship that can produce best of everything.

    Thank you, Dr.Sophie, for your initiatives in creating the Craft Exhibition at Roshni Nilaya. Let the students earn their taste in as many professions so that they can be as creative as possible in order to make a good career out of their God given talents.
