Hundreds of Qatar migrant workers 'unpaid for months'

Doha, Sep 21 (AFP): As many as 400 migrant staff working for an electrical company in Qatar have gone unpaid for up to four months, a leading figure in the Indian community said on Tuesday.

The workers are set to meet the Indian ambassador in Doha within the next two weeks to discuss their plight, Arvin Patil of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum charity told AFP.

The staff are thought to be employed by an Abu Dhabi-based firm. "Around 300 to 400 people have not been paid," said Patil. "We could give money if there were one or two people but 300 minimum is very, very difficult. We are interested in helping these people."
Patil said people from other migrant groups based in the emirate had also not been paid by the firm.

Indians comprise the largest single group of expatriates in Qatar, numbering around 545,000 out of a total population of some 2.5 million. The failure to pay them comes despite the introduction of a Wage Protection System (WPS) last November, meant to ensure that wages are paid electronically.

Bosses of firms which do not comply with the law face fines or imprisonment. The WPS is a key reform introduced by the 2022 World Cup host in an attempt to improve labour conditions following widespread international criticism of Qatar's treatment of migrant workers.

Qatar has largely avoided the problems over pay experienced by other countries in the Gulf. In July, a senior Indian embassy staffer said there had been no calls to help feed labourers stranded without wages after losing their jobs, as has happened elsewhere in the region.

He told AFP this problem did not exist in Qatar. Yesterday, staff at a hospital in eastern Saudi Arabia went on strike over unpaid wages. The Qatar pay dispute comes at a time of belt-tightening in Doha because of falling gas and oil prices.

Qatar faces an estimated budget deficit of more than USD 12 billion in 2016, its first in 15 years, and officials have warned further deficits would follow in 2017 and 2018.

Now we should know the real factor why this company is not paying their salary to it's workers!!! Maybe the Qatari govt is not clearing the dues for it's service contractors or subcontractors on time or delayed for a long period!!!Each migrant labour working in gulf countries have his own employment contract for certain period and the company should fulfill it's contract obligations within the stipulated time !!!Now we blame Modi govt for this failure !!!Is it fair enough ...a big question mark anyway???.

A million Dollar question. More or less, same salary but bonded for the duration of visa and ban stamp of a specific period if resigned.

Scorching heat, back breaking hard labour, line up for toilets (@ 2 for 25) for two hours in the morning, bug-infected bunk beds, camps away from family living type of locations, tasteless mess food, pittance insurance and contract for treatment in cheaper clinics and more ! Still, people prefer this bondage than dignified, with-family life in India. You are right - Why still rush for Gulf countries ???

Nobody believes this before self experiencing. Once gone after pledging wife's gold/parents' property to pay for the agent, its a prestige issue to return before paying off that loan.

    Shame !

To add to the misery, now India is facing grave problem (do or die) with PAK and any escalation may lead to a border war with PAK.
We cannot sit quite or idle but counter action is expected any time. In such a situation India may have bear unprecedented consequence on emerging economy and other developments. BJP will have to play their cards diligently and effectively. War will not solve all the problems. We are in a critical juncture to save the country and save our economy. Big question mark on Mr. Modi .

Having three years tread behind them, what is the Government doing ? Still cribbing over spilt milk by 60 years of Congress rule ? Where is Make In India ?

Is the Government shivering over reduction in the inflow of foreign currency if all workers in the Gulf return ? You are not creating jobs, you are selling petrol for more price than it used to be when Congress was in power, where is the money going ? Consumed over doubled salary of MPs ???? Or, on foreign tours ??

    Explain otherwise !

If you were MLA and MP you would have taken hike silently and kept quiet 😁 same is the story of others.
Most shocking story is that MLA and MP gets big monthly pension after their 5 years term. That is very very disgusting!

Previously manual labourers were from Andhra, Tamil, Karnataka, Kerala etc were going to Gulf, which is almost stopped.
It's for they have excelled with education.
    Their Population also has reduced.
Now the labourers we get mainly from Orissa, Bihar, UP etc.
In 10-15 years, that trend also bound to change due to education and reduced population.
We will face scarcity of labourers.
Govt should visualize the tredn and hasten infrastructure development now, to avoid cost escalation later.
This can help Gulfies to employ.
Then Gulf natives will learn to work.

The Govt. budget of many Gulf countries are based on USD 80 per barrel of oil. With price at USD 50 for a proonged period, we can expect to see more of these stories. The Govt. Of India needs to prepare to handle these situations
