Mangalore, Mar 9: Great works of literature cannot be penned unless the author rises above the psyche of a common man, opined Na D`Souza, senior litterateur.
 
He was delivering the inaugural address at the fourth students' Sahitya Sammelana (literary meet) organized by the Mangalore University - Post-graduate Old Students Association (PGOSA) held at Sharada Vidyalaya here on Saturday March 8.

"Attaining mastery over the language before attempting to write any literary piece is essential. It is impossible to touch others' mind without the help of language. Hence top priority in literature should go to language," he opined.

"While writing making others experience and feel his personal skills, is the main duty of a writer. Moreover, he should ensure that his fertile imagination is grounded in reality, D`Souza advised.
 
A Eshwarayya, journalist and well known art critic in his presidential address opined that literature can be an ideal medium wherein one is relieved of one's tension. Today youngsters are detaching themselves from the reading habit, empty libraries is a case in point, he lamented.

Rajesh Padmar, president of the Mangalore University PGOSA, welcomed the gathering. Rohinaksha Shirlalau proposed the vote of thanks while Sibanthi Padmanabha, correspondent of the newspaper Deccan Herald compered the programme.
