Pioli named Fiorentina head coach

Florence (Italy), June 6 (IANS): Italian football club ACF Fiorentina on Tuesday announced that former Lazio and Inter Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has agreed to a two-season contract, replacing Portuguese tactician Paulo Sousa under whom they failed to retain a spot in 2017-18 Europa League.

An official release from the club stated: "ACF Fiorentina is pleased to announce that Stefano Pioli is the new head coach of the first team. The 51-year-old will sign a two-year contract with the club, with an option for the third season."

A former defender, Pioli made 156 appearances for Fiorentina between 1989 and 1995 and also captained the club.

This appointment can act as a redemption of sorts for Pioli after he was unceremoniously sacked by Inter Milan just six months after he was appointed. Inter milan had lost five out of his last six matches in charge.

Pioli will hope to change the fortunes of the Fiorentina which finished eighth last season in the Serie A and last won a major title more than 15 years ago.

The club added: "The coach will be officially unveiled to the media at a press conference at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Wednesday."
