Bengaluru, Jul 6: A man took an expensive bike on the pretext of a test ride and never returned. The high-end bike was put up for sale on an online classified portal.
The incident occurred at Marathahalli in city on Monday, July 2.
Naveen, a hotelier by profession, had advertised in an online portal that his expensive bike was for sale. As he had incurred huge losses recently in business, he wanted to sell his bike to repay loans.
A man approached Naveen on Monday and stated that he was interested in buying the bike and sought a test-ride. Naveen handed over the bike along with photocopies of documents to the stranger. After that the man took the bike for a test ride.
When the man did not return even after an hour, Naveen grew suspicious. After a search for almost an hour and verifying CCTV footage from a nearby shop, Naveen concluded that his bike was stolen.
He lodged a complaint later with the Marathahalli police.
Two arrested for online vehicle fraud
The Cyber Crime police in city on Wednesday July 5, arrested two persons for cheating customers on an online portal posing themselves as car sellers.
Augustine (42), a native of Nigeria and a resident of Bidarahalli in city and his associate Jagadish, are the arrested persons. Jagadish was facilitating SIM cards for Augustine, the police said.
Augustine used to post advertisements on a popular web portal with a photo of a Maruti Swift car, by quoting a very low price. When customers approached him, Augustine asked them to transfer a partial amount to a bank account. After the customers transferred the money, Augustine would not answer their calls.
Jagadish, a worker at a mobile phone shop, was helping Augustine in getting SIM cards without proper y documents. He activated the SIM cards by forging documents, which helped Augustine in the fraud.
