Mangaluru: DC orders city & rural buses to lower foot boards, sets deadline

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 1: Foot boards of all the city and rural transport buses have been ordered to be lowered to a level that is not higher than 52 cm from the ground. Deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada, Dr K G Jagadeesha, who issued this instruction, warned that the buses found to be violating this norm will face legal action.

Speaking at the district transport authority on Monday July 31, Jagadeesha said that senior citizens, women and children have been complaining about height of bus steps since many years, and hence, he has decided to crack the whip.

When some private bus owners said that rural roads have potholes and therefore foot boards are placed higher, the deputy commissioner pointed out to them that buses of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation have been able to abide by this norm. He questioned them why they cannot follow suit.

Jagadeesha felt that it would be in fitness of things to allow movement of only city transport buses in the city by blocking entry for inter city and long distance buses into the city, in view of traffic problems encountered here. He called upon bus owners and the general public to come out with their opinions about this suggestion.

When Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti president Hanumanth Kamath complained about non-issuance of tickets in city buses continues in spite of the issue having been raised earlier, the deputy commissioner advised the buses not to force him to act against them in these aspects, and reminded them that issuance of tickets is compulsory. He also said that buses can be stopped only in bus bays in the city. He told the assistant commissioner of police that the habit of stopping buses whenever people signal them to stop, throws traffic into disarray.

The DC asked contract carriage buses to mention without exception their destinations in the boards as Pumpwell as they do not have permission to visit State Bank area. He said this rids people of the need to change buses unnecessarily.

When the nation is looking for 'Digital India', undivide private transporters in Canara don't wanted to adapt to modern transportation mode. They charge more for less amenities.

The green buses which was introduced in Udupi is really promising. The maker like Volvo,MAN and Mercedes have better understanding for passengers when designing their buses.
Whereas in Undivided Canara conventional boarding and alighting through steep climbing with breaking back with whistle of 'Bega, Bega' is really inviting death.
I appreciate DC orders. At Least someone is speaking at last for the old, disabled, pregnant, kids and patients who wanted safe travel.
Sir, Please introduce the low foot boards buses as early as possible and save the old people like us.

Somewhere down below is my comment - ''Ok with lowering the footboard..... but what about bringing a rule that the bus should have doors and they are to be closed when the vehicle is moving.''

As of now it has 44 likes( which is sensible). But it also has 1 dislike. (apparently, one moron does not like the idea of doors on buses or else he hates me, i guess :))

Other thing I noticed is that except one, no one else mentioned about buses needing doors. I think that most of the people assume that buses don't come with door anywhere in the world. Trust me people, buses do come equipped with doors. But they dont over here.

Next thing is that the police really seem to be behind the two wheelers riding with out helmet..... but they dont seem to have any problems with over loading of the buses. i have seen some buses where some guys just barely hang on.

It is really good decision. Aged people are always struggling while getting in and out. But our private bus owners will not implement this. Because most of the bus owners are politicians know.

How many times this issue has been discussed. But whats the use in discussing like this? Take immediate action to seize such buses and lower footboards and after completing the work release such buses to the owner on collecting the expences incurred for the work,

Kindly have a look at the RTO office, it looks like a waste unused building. The location where the fees (chalan) are being paid, looks like the ceiling will fall down now or then... Please make sure nobody is hurt, kindly take precautionary measure before it's too late....There are no basic facilities like Toilet, Washroom..... There is no proper ventilation, too much sweating, heat nside the building.. . There is huge Corruption in the RTO, officials colluding with the Driving Schools. Kindly look into this matter too.. Also kindly advice Drivers not to use the Loud Horns, which may lead to confrontations on the roads which may lead to road rages, Traffic Jams & permanent damage to ear drums especially small Children. Hope someone will raise this issue in the Public Domain....

Kudos to The D.C. Jagadeesha on his excellent initiative. It is commonly observed that The City buses halt wherever the drivers find it convenient to pick up passengers thus obstructing movement of other vehicles. By all means this aspect should be controlled.

One reads of any number of auto accidents and deaths. Overspeeding is indeed a menace. SPEED GOVERNORS is perhaps an answer.

Everything is OK, but keep give correct timings in between buses, for bus drivers doesn't have option that they have to drive like formula one race to reach bus stops in given timings, The traffic departments issuing permits without any proper time calculations.. i have seen in my earlier college days one of express bus should reach karkala-moodbedri in 8-10 mints where other bus will take 20 minutes to reach same route...

My hats to DC for his sensible and most wanted order. This buses with high footboard have killed and injure many passengers both old and young. This lower footboard will make young children and old people to board and alight buses easily.

    DC sir,

Would they agree with you or they will protest.

Along with the lowering of foot board, followings also need to be observed:-
    1) Conductors standing on the foot when passengers are getting in and out, particularly female passengers.
    2) Too much whistling while stopping at every stop.
    3) Drivers and conductors are in such a hurry as if someone has set fire to their tail.
    4) Stopping anywhere / middle of the road.
    5) and obviously, Rash driving.

good move by DC. but till when ?
this was done by before also but our smart bus owners dont bother about public or passengers.
i request our DC to Take action on other things also like over speeding, loud horns , ticket issue , stopping bus wherever the driver likes , and one more thing cutting short the route and sending passengers to another bus which is offenly done by mangaldevi to suratkal bus owners which is more inconvient , irresponsible and against the traffic rule.
so i request rspected authorities to go through this and take action on these bus owners.
