Mangalore, May 8: Mangalore South Congress candidate Ivan D'Souza on Wednesday May 7 blamed BJP candidate and former MLA Yogish Bhat of misusing his influence during his door-to-door campaign in the constituency.

Speaking to media persons, he alleged that Yogish has been telling all the voters that they need not pay the arrears of the water bills of the Mangalore City Corporation. He said that the  BJP government is responsible for the hike in the water bill. 'Yogish Bhat is misguiding the voters by telling them not to pay the arrears,' said Ivan.

'BJP has never opposed the implementation of self-assessment scheme (SAS) in the city. The locals have to pay taxes for everything they have. Only the Congress corporators opposed this tax system in MCC meetings. But Yogish Bhat is misleading the voters.' he said.

Expressing his anguish over discrepancies in the distribution of EPICs, Ivan said that those involved in taking photographs for voter identity cards are not doing their duty well. Besides the fact that the photo sessions begin late, the names of the voters are also wrongly printed on the identity cards in many cases. In a few cases, photo sessions have been recorded as already done even though they are not. He therefore urged that another photo session be organized ahead of the assembly elections.

Ivan expressed his satisfaction on the reception he received from the people when he visited all the  38 wards in his constituency. He also said that he is confident of winning the elections.

Congress spokesperson M G Hegade, senior Congress leader Kodinjal Ibrahim and others were present at the press meet.

IVAN is a dynamic youth leader. All through his life he has struggled for the upliftment of downtrodden people. Seeing his youth spirit and everready to work for the constituency people of Mangalore South have decided to give me a marginal victory. Yogesh Bhat has done nothing except spreading animity on cast basis. Even the opinion poll suggest that Ivan will win the constituency given tough fight to Yogish Bhat. Yogish Bhat have to pay for his misdeeds after this elections. As he already got the news about his failure he is trying to lure people by misleading them and not to pay their dues.

Whatever may be the statment but one thing is sure Ivan is a better candiate than Yogesh. Atleast we wants to see what Ivan can do for Mangalore once he goes elected. My best wishes are there on this time with Ivan. Hope he will not disappoint the Mangloreans after winning the Mangalore south seat.

It's time we asked some fundamental questions about the contribution of Mr. Yogish Bhat to the city, instead of merely parrotting what his supporters say. After all, he has been the MLA for the last 14 years. Everyone would be surprised if they knew to what 'causes' a bulk of his MLA funds went (no, it wont fall under 'development', but I won't mention it here so as not to cause offence). His commitment to peace in the city has been suspect from the beginning. 14 years has been a long tenure, so those who support him can surely give us a list of his 'achievements' (or at least one major achievement) during this period? What exactly has he contributed ? Surely they can answer this question?

Ivan knows he cannot win. This is his pre election press conference to speak out reasons for his defeat, and the second reason will be blaming someone in the congress party...
