Hassan: Youth drowns during Ganapati immersion procession

Hassan, Aug 28: In a tragic incident which happened at Shettigondanahalli in Channarayapatna taluk of the district on Sunday August 27, a youth who had participated in the immersion procession of Ganapati idol drowned.

Avinash (24), son of Chikke Gowda from this village was the victim. As usual, the villagers had installed Ganapati idol this year, and on Sunday late afternoon, taken out immersion procession of the idol. When the procession reached the water body in the outskirts of the village, and the idol was being immersed the youth drowned.

Water is filled in this particular pond through lift irrigation. Avinash wanted to have a close look at the pond and therefore, swam across the pond sometime before the idol was to be immersed. When returning, he suddenly drowned and lost his life.

Fire brigade, which was alerted, rushed to the spot and undertook operation. After initial efforts failed, the fire personnel went deep into the pond on a raft and searched around the area from where the youngster had disappeared. They traced the body and brought it out.

Police sub-inspector of rural police station here, Kusuma, visited the spot and registered a case of unnatural death.
