Mangalore: Convention of Specially-abled at Town Hall on June 1

Mangalore, May 27: A convention of physically challenged persons will be organized at Town Hall here under the aegis of Dakshina Kannada district federation for persons with disability on Sunday June 1.

The federation plans to distribute scholarships and stationeries to the selected  specially-abled students on the occasion, while financial assistance will also be disbursed to the physically challenged persons.

Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, federation honarary president, addressing the media persons on Monday May 26, informed that Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math will be inaugurating the convention. Zilla panchayat president K P Sucharita Shetty will chair.

District deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao, city corporation mayor Ganesh Hosabettu, state commissioner for persons with disability Das Suryavamshi, women and child welfare department deputy director Gertrude Veigas, Disabled Welfare Institute secretary Prof Rajendra Shetty, businessman Ajit Kumar Rai Malady, Lioness district governor Kripa Alva and Corporation Bank chief manager Balakrishna Alse will be among the chief guests of the function.

Note books donated by Sri Kshetra Dharmastala Rural Development Project will be handed over to about 150 students, with 50 students also getting a financial assistance of Rs 500 each. Equipment needed by the physically challenged persons like wheelchairs, hearing equipment, crutches etc, will also be distributed on the occasion. A total of 50 physically challenged people will also be given Rs 1000 each in order to encourage them to pursue their careers, Kalkura explained.

All efforts will be made to reopen the diasbility rehabilitation centre located at Kuntikan, which has become defunct in the last two years, by taking up the matter actively with the government, said federation president Dinesh Shetty. The federation also plans to set up a home for the disabled people in the city and the federation is putting forth a demand for the constitution of a separate board for the welfare of the physically challenged, he added.

    I am very happy to know about the forth coming convention and the activities planed by the Federation.I implore God's blessings for the sucess of the convention.It is responsibility of the soceity to respect the rights of the Persons with disabilities and include them in the field of education ,employment,social and religious participation.
