Mangalore: 3,516 Raids Conducted to Put Breaks on Arrack Sale

Mangalore, May 28: The district excise department officials seem to have woken up to the challenges posed by the manufacaturers of illlicit liquor. They are working against the hooch breweries on a war footing, and have conducted 3,400 raids between July 1, 2007 and Monday May 26 this year. The police department on its part, conducted 146 raids, registered 544 cases and arrested 462 people engaged in this activity during this period, informed district deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao.

Addressing a press meet, he informed that the excise department officials also seized 8,823.6 litres of arrack, 5,472.245 litres Indian made liquor, 3,083.480 litres hooch, 1,818.23 litres beer, 6,695 litres  spirit, 535 litres toddy, 1,05,725 litres of illicit brew besides 135 litres of spurious blended liquor.

The police department too has been lending its hand in having a tight leash on this activity. The police officials confiscated 3,468 litres of arrack, 1,178 litres of Indian made liquor, 403 litres of spurious liquor, 7.9 litres beer, 25,090 litres spirit and 670.60 litres hooch, the deputy commissioner added.

The excise department seized 29 vehicles during its raids, while the police seized 18 vehicles for the said offence. Four sachet making machines, two motor pumps, cash, filmroll, about 1,500 empty bottles, 24 plastic cans, two drums, an aluminium vessel were among the things seized by the departments so far.

M S Hussain, excise deputy comissioner, noted that the activity of making illicit liquor was prominently found in areas like Bunder, Adyapady, Kannur, Pacchanady, Gundi, Adyar, Tannirbavi, Kuloor, Bondel, Nayarkudru, Bangrakuloor, Pacchimogeru, Maravoor, Neermarga, Padil, Moodshedde, Sultan Battery, Balkunje and Karneerekudru in Mangalore taluk, Adamkudru, Gattikudru, Lakshmigudde, Kadekar, Kallapu, Bagambila, Pavoor, Ranipura, Heelar, Ullal, Bandikotya, Punakudru, Moodbidri, Thumbe, Salethur, Panaje, Sulliapadav, Kallugundi, Goonadka, Peraja, Permude, Kakkinje etc, he informed.
