Bengaluru: Rain coupled with thunder, lightning, pound state - accounts for five lives

Bengaluru, Sep 7: In addition to the city, old Mysuru, Malnad and north Karnataka regions have been getting torrential rain since the last few days. Because of rain, five persons died in different districts of the state, while three others suffered injuries. A house suffered extensive damage due to lightning.

T Narasipur near Mysuru registered 14 cm of rain during the day ending on Wednesday morning, which was the highest in the state.

Fakkirappa Siddappa Gonera (25) from Aladageri village in Haveri district, died due to lightning on Wednesday afternoon in his field. In this incident, Sharanappa Basappa Gonera (38) and Maruti Hanumanthappa Olekar (35) were injured. Both of them were admitted into the government hospital at Ranebannur.

Malakappa Sooryavamshi (40) working in his field in Navalur village near Dharwad died due to lightning. Pandappa Koobappa Lamani (42), died on Wednesday evening at Haradagatti village in Gadag district as lightning struck him while manuring his field of sunflower crop.

Sandesh Gowda (7) died after the wall of his house crashed on him on Wednesday morning at Kodasige village in H D Kote taluk, Myusuru district. Sandesh was preparing to go to school when the wall came crashing down on him. Chinnappa (52) from Muduguppe near Bherya village died due to the collapsing of a wall of a house.

In coastal Karnataka, some areas in Dakshina Kannada district received rain on Wednesday although the entire district experienced cloudy weather with occasional thunder. Bykampady and Moodbidri got good rain on Wednesday. Udupi district also experienced cloudy weather with occasional rainfall.

After lightning struck a house belonging to Kishore in Bola Kody in Karkala taluk on Wednesday afternoon, wiring, power meter etc were burnt and wall developed cracks. Electronic equipment including television, refrigerator and other things suffered damages. Loss in this incident has been estimated at two lac rupees. Kishore and his mother, Rekha Bhandary, were sitting in the front hall of the house when lightning passed next to them before striking the wall. The two had a providential escape.
