Puttur, Sep 7: A leopard got  stuck in a trap laid out for wild boars at Mundrodi Adra in Bantra village near Kadaba in the taluk on the night of Tuesday September 5. On Wednesday, it was rescued by forest officials and released in the sanctuary.

A local had laid the trap in the rubber plantation of Mundrodi Sriniva Rai, without the latter's information or permission. A leopard which strayed from its forest, reached this spot on Tuesday night and got trapped. As cable wire got tightly wrapped around  the waist of this eight-year old male leopard, it could not free itself on its own.

Some locals who were passing by near this spot on way to fields for collecting greens heard the sounds made by the trapped leopard. They ventured near and were overtaken by fear about the wild animal. They conveyed information to locals after which forest department officials were alerted. Forest officials along with veterinary anesthetist, rushed to the spot. Police from Kadaba also visited the spot. The officials injected anesthesia to the animal with the help of gun after some effort, and then released it from the trap. The leopard was put into a box and released in Gundia sanctuary.

Medical officer of Pilikula Nisargadhama, Dr Vishnu, senior scientist, Vikram Lobo, animal supervisor, Dinesh Kumar, assistant forest conservator from Sullia, Jagannath N H, Panja range forest officer,Praveen Kumar Shetty, and others were present.
