Udupi, Sep 8: Members of Udupi district Mahila Congress, on Thursday, September 7, expressed deep condolences on the death of well known journalist, writer and editor, who was shot dead by miscreants. A condolence meet was held at Congress Bhavan in Brahmagiri.

Addressing the gathering, Rajya sabha member Oscar Fernandes said, 'The nation lost a good personality, rational writer and a critic. It is a sad moment. She was a strong woman who fought for human rights. She made a mark at the national level. Let her soul rest in peace.”

Nagesh Udyavar said that people were spreading false news about her work giving statements on social media. “I personally feel that I have lost a sister. Some people are portraying that she was killed on property issue. Yes, she was going through economic crisis in her life. Despite that, she did a lot of reforms in bringing Naxals to main stream society. Many suspect the involvement of Naxals behind her death. She fought a lot for the betterment of Naxals. I am sure that there is no involvement of Naxals. The concerned department should take stern action against the culprits”

Jyothi Hebbar, vice-president, district Mahila Congress said, “Gowri Lankesh was a bold lady who raised voice against harassment on women. No one can suppress her voice and rational thoughts. It is difficult to lead a peaceful life by facing majorities. She is a woman, who showed her courage in her death. The life of Indian women is in difficulty.”

“Gowri had been fighting in favor of women. India got freedom, but when will we get true independence. They have killed her physically, but not her thoughts. It is the biggest tragedy that we have lost right to express ones opinion,” she added.

Sunitha Shetty, Selina Karkada, Sandhya Thilakraj, Ramesh Kanchan, Narasimha Murthy, Sarasu D Bangers and other leaders were present.
