Bengaluru, Sep 8: Members of Karnataka’s Legislative Council representing teachers and graduates’ constituencies continued their protest for the third day on Friday against the State government’s failure on fulfilling demands of school teachers and college lecturers.

But the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called on striking legislators and appealed to them to withdraw their strike.

The Chief Minister assured the striking legislators that a meeting would be convened on September 15 to discuss all their demands.

The MLCs, especially those belonging to opposition BJP and JD(S) have been protesting in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Vidhana Soudha since Wednesday.

They have prepared a charter of 32 demands. 

The BJP and JD(S) MLCs alleged that the State government did not have proper guidelines for the transfer of teachers. 

The transfers should be made before the commencement of the academic year and not during the course of the academic year. 

If teachers were transferred in the middle of the academic year it would affect both students and teachers, they said.

The major demands include hike in pay-scale for lecturers in private colleges and recruitment of lecturers in private, aided and government colleges and transfer of lecturers in a transparent manner.

The MLCs expressed their resentment against Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanvir Sait’s “irresponsible” statement that said “you (MLCs) do whatever you wish to do.’’
