Modi praises India's efforts in sports


New Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the country's efforts in various sports and hailed the achievements of Indian sportspersons.

"There have been great news in the field of sports in the past few days. Our sportspersons have displayed great performances in various games and have made the country proud," Modi said in his monthly radio broadcast 'Mann Ki Baat'.

He praised the Indian hockey team for winning the Asia Cup 2017 by beating Malaysia 2-1 in the final in Dhaka. "With great efforts of our team, we won the cup after 10 years."

He also expressed admiration for Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, who clinched his third Superseries title of the season as he won the men's singles title of the Denmark Open.

"It was an excellent display of talent by Kidambi Srikanth at the Denmark Open..."

The Prime Minister spoke about the just ended FIFA Under-17 World Cup. "Even though India didn't win, our players won everyone's hearts with their game. The tournament was entertaining and engaging for people from India and abroad."
