Udupi: BJP questions state govt’s decision to set up Indira canteen at Board High School

Udupi, Dec 1: BJP on Thursday, November 30 questioned the state government’s decision to lay the foundation stone for Indira Canteen at Board High School, near service bus stand.

Yashpal Suvarna, opposition party member, speaking at the general body meeting of CMC at Sathyamurthy auditorium said, “The decision to lay the foundation for Indira Canteen at Board High School was not discussed in the council body meeting. It seems the government has superseded Municipality Act.

CMC commissioner Manjunathayya clarifying the issue of canteen said, “Based on the Cabinet decision, the CM instructed to set up Indira Canteen before January 2018. The state has given autonomous power to the district commissioner. She has all rights to take emergency decisions. Hence, it was decided.”

A councilor raised the issue regarding illegal street vendors and shops on pathway. He demanded the immediate clearance of illegal shops in the city.

CMC president Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje said, “I will look into the problem and will order the clearance after examination. I will order to conduct survey to examine the feasibility of shop owners. Sometimes, councilors themselves recommend granting permission to install shops on sympathy on road side. However, the illegal shops will be removed within a week.”

Chandrakanth, councilor of Santhekatte ward said, “Just a year ago, a well equipped fish market worth Rs 10 lac was set up at Santhekatte, but fisherwomen do not use the facility. Instead, they sit on the streets to draw more customers.”

Commissioner asked Yashpal Suvarna, chairman of SK and Udupi District Co-operative Fish Marketing Federation Ltd, to convince them and re-locate. Baby Salian, a leader of the fisherwomen group said that they needed space for storage at the market. He also said that fisherwomen of Udupi and customers are facing many problems like water supply, parking and poor maintenance.

Raghavendra, environmental engineer said, “Engineers are planning to build bunds of 6 meters on Baje dam to store water for summer. Construction of gate work has been taken up. According to the plan, the city has been divided into three zones to tackle water shortage.”

Prashant Bhat, a councillor said that three vending zones have been opened in Beedinagudde, Udupi and Ajjarkad for street venders to sell commodities.

Naveen Bhandary said, “A bio-gas unit has been opened at Beedinagudde. But there is no use of it. Three workers have simply been appointed. They were not around when there was a case of gas leakage.”
Clarifying the issue, Raghavendra said, “The gas will not be used for external use. The produced gas is usedfor air computer, 3 HP crusher and for 10kb capacity of generator. There is a plan of providing access energy to night shelter center, located at Beedinagudde.
A proposal has been sent to the concerned department to release Rs 15 crore for developmental works of upcoming Paryaya. It was done through the district in-charge minister.

Senior opposition leader M R Pai said that maintenance of stock account was pending.

Replying to Pai, accountant Gayathri said, “There is nothing pending in the previous accounts. Now every works happen online. There is very less work on paper. The payment of bills and updating will become easy and there is no scope for blaming others. Each one is equally responsible for their documents. The online entry procedure will help to avoid forgery, mistakes and keeps everything transparent.

CMC vice-president Sandhya Thilakraj was present.
