Udupi, Feb 27: In a tragic incident, two labourers got buried alive under a pile of mud while digging the road to lay pipelines and manhole at Kaup here on Tuesday February 27 evening.

The deceased have been identified as contract labourers Dasappa (49) and Umesh (41), both natives of Chitradurga.

They were working on a project to lay pipelines and manhole. The work was being undertaken by Deviprasad Constructions at a cost of Rs 3 crore released by the Karnataka Water Supply and Drainage Board.

It is learnt that the hole to lay the pipelines had already been dug, and the two labourers were standing on either side of it, measuring the total area that was dug up. Vehicles were passing as usual on the remaining part of the road.

Sources said that due to the movement of heavy vehicles, the pile of loose mud disintegrated. The two labourers lost balance and fell into the ditch and got buried under the mud.

As soon as they fell in, efforts were made to rescue them with the help of a JCB. However, fearing that it would cause injury to the labourers, people manually removed the mud and tried to rescue the duo.

Kaup Soori Shetty, actor Rajesh Alape, timber merchant Suresh Shetty, council member Anil Kumar and others rushed to the spot and with the help of other labourers managed to bring out the two men after about 30 minutes of consistent efforts. The two were rushed to hospital by ambulance where they were declared brought dead.

The ground-level work was being carried out by sub-contractor Nagaraj, and it is alleged that no safety precautions were taken.

Kaup MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MLA Lalaji Mendon, Congress district president Naveenchandra Shetty and other local leaders visited the spot.

Additional police commissioner Kumarchandra, Kaup circle inspector Halamurthy Rao and other police personnel are conducting investigations.

    RIP.
Safety has no place in India either at work or on Roads.
When poor and low profile workers would be valued and left to live respectfully, in this digital India?

Very sad incident. My heartful sympathy to the family members of deceased. Contractor should be hold responsible for this tragedy as no precaution was taken. Why traffic was allowed to ply so near to the construction work. Why it was not diverted till the work is finished. Why no barricade was installed / constructed ?

3 crores project there is not safety measure taken by the contractor agency.. Board & contractor agency held responsible for the incident... Due to lack of Safety system during excavation job..

To avoid this kind of incident simple 3 safety measure should be taken : 1) Permit system, 2) Barricading the area with caution board 3) Heavy vehicle movement should be restricted near the excavated pit. ...

In India there is no safety measure taken place while doing excavation jobs the contractor has to provide an HSE Officer for such a works with a permit system and the shoring to be done so there won't be any collapse of mud at the edge of the excavation. so that the safety officer can analyzed job safety measure before starting the work

India produces lakhs of safety officers every year. They end up finding some other professions as there is no awareness of safety in India at all. One can loose his life just by walking on footpath and falling into manhole which is just left open by ignorance.

JCB must have been used instead of manually removing the labourers.
JCB can also move slowly to avoid / reduce the injury.

Speak about workers' safety many people laugh. Politicians are worried and busy with their safety not the safety of those who vote for them.

3 crores value of contract job and there is no proper safety measure for the safety of labourers. What a tragedy. These poor labourers have been exploited by all, at the cost of their lives. What is the foreman/writer doing there. Is he not accountable. Contractor should held liable for the death of these 2 labourers.
Unfortunately, nobody gives damn to the lives of workers. Very sorry state.
