MANGALORE, Aug 20: Degree college students in the city and other places in Dakshina Kananda boycotted classes on Tuesday, seeking the Mangalore University to revoke certain restrictions on the carry-over system.

At present, the university’s carry-over system bars the students from appearing for the fifth semester examination without clearing all the papers of the first semester. They cannot appear for sixth semester examination without clearing all the papers of first and second semesters.

Demand

The protesters, led by Akhil Bharat Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP), demanded that students should be allowed to take the fifth and sixth semester examinations, unconditionally.

However, students of the Mangalore-based St. Agnes Degree College, which is a women’s college, attended the classes. Students of St. Aloysius College, Canara College, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Besant Women’s College, University College, Gokarnanatheswara College, S.D.M. College of Law, S.D.M. College of Business Management, Government First Grade College, Mangalore, Govindadasa College, Surathkal boycotted classes, in response to the call by the ABVP.

They staged a protest at Ambedkar Circle for about 45 minutes.

Harish Poonja, member, national executive of ABVP, alleged that the university was dilly-dallying on the issue. Various student organisations had staged protests in the beginning of this year urging the university to lift the restrictions to carry-over system. But the university had not taken any decision to this effect, he said and added that ABVP would intensify the agitation if their demand was not met by the university.

He said that students in most of the colleges in Sullia, Puttur, Belthangady, Ujire, Mulky and Udupi boycotted the classes.

‘Already amended’

K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, told The Hindu that the regulations pertaining to carry-over system had been amended by removing all restrictions.

The amended regulation had been sent to the Government for approval. If approved, the university could issue a notification to this effect.

I agree with the students demand. Let them get their degree after completing all the papers or subjects. in this way they will not loose their years. If we can allow some one to get a degree in one sitting even if not gone to the college, what is wrong with previous carry forward system.

How can the students at the university level be so foolish? Their demand sounds like reading a book from the last page! If a student has not cleared the first and second semesters, which are supposed to be the basis for the following ones, how can they expect to pass the final ones? Well, if they boycott the classes only for the sake of fun, then, they are the ONLY loosers!!

Your demands are not right. You should concentrate on your studies rather than to boycot the classes. You are the biggest loosers in this case. After some years you are stepping to your FUTURE so it is important to you to get your degree at the end.

This system is not new. All the universities that follow the semester system already have this. ABVP is just trying to create ruckus. Other student bodies have no problem with this

This is ridiculous! I reckon that a student is not competent enough to answer a final semester if he has'nt cleared the first, second or say maybe the third semester. Political outfits wait for an oppurtunity to make a mountain of a mole hill inorder to gain publicity ( lets not forget general elections are nearing hence this gimmick)) and in the process drag innocent students into this by misleading them.

Ultimately its the student who loses out.In the long run its better if students focus on studies rather than involving themselves with these petty politics.

This is not the right thing done by the students. If they more carry on subjects it will affect more while they are in final year. All these students unions are wasting time of the students. they are doing for political gimick. please my friends concentrate more on studies.

The university is right in framing the norms for students. 4 attempts and the student cannot clear the exams - its time that the student has to look for an alternative. Can u imagine the space constraint for the university and the college to keep track of your marks register!!! Its awful. Students you are the future generations of the nation. Its time you understand your worth and do not indulge in these political tantrums.

This is a baseless demand. what If the students dont clear the paper till the final year can the university give a degree !!? anyway they'll have year loss. Certain amount of discipline is required. carrying many old papers also makes studies tougher for the student... Just think of the exams a student should answer sometimes its like one paper is the morning and other afternoon. Its really horrible I have seen cases like this.
